University receives Mellon Foundation grant to hire Black studies faculty

Rochester has received a grant from the Mellon Foundation to support the cluster hiring of three new tenure-track faculty members in the Department of Black Studies. The grant from the foundation’s Higher Learning program will be used to recruit leading faculty who work in the subfields of Black geographies, Black sexuality and/or trans studies, and an additional open-field search.

IN MEMORIAM

Flags will be lowered for Barbara Iglewski

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Thursday, January 4, for Barbara Iglewski, a professor emeritus in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, who died on December 10. Iglewski joined the University faculty in 1986.

2024 mileage rate update

Beginning on January 1, the standard mileage rate will be 67 cents per mile for business use, up 1.5 cents from 2023. The mileage log form is located on the reimbursement website in the forms section.

Start 2024 with your annual biometric screening

Biometric screening clinics are available starting Tuesday, January 2, at locations across the University. Check-in on your health, get your questions answered, and set goals for the new year in one 20-minute appointment with a registered nurse. Schedule your screening and learn how to earn your $125 incentive through Well-U.

Christmas Eve mass with the Catholic Newman Community

Catholic Newman Community will host a Christmas Eve mass on Sunday, December 24, at 5 p.m. in the Interfaith Chapel, river level. A reception will follow; you are welcome to bring a dish to pass.

Kwanzaa Celebration at MAG

Immerse yourself in music, art, culture, and community at Memorial Art Gallery’s Kwanzaa Celebration, taking place Thursday, December 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. This event is free; no registration is required. It does not include museum admission. Find a full schedule of events for the celebration here.


SPECIAL HOURS FOR HOLIDAYS AND WINTER BREAK

The following non-clinical offices and services report special hours of operation for the holidays and Winter Break. Note: clinical offices should follow their standard policies for holidays.

  • Campus Mail Center: Closed December 25 and January 1 and 15. No Saturday hours until January 20. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to pick up their mail and packages before leaving for break or going on vacation.
  • Eastman School of Music Box Office: Closed December 22 through January 1. Online ticketing is available.
  • Food Pantry (River Campus): From December 24 through January 14 open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 3 to 5 p.m. and on Thursdays from 3 to 6 p.m. Find more information under the Wilson Commons tab in the Winter Break 2023 section of the building hours website.
  • Graduate Medical Education Office: Closing at 3 p.m. on December 22 and remaining closed through December 29.
  • International Services Office: Closing at 2 p.m. on December 22 and closed on December 25 and 27 and January 1. The office is available for service desk and virtual drop-ins from 10 a.m. to noon on December 26, 28, and 29. If you have an immigration emergency while the office is closed, contact the Department of Public Safety at (585) 275-3333.
  • Parking Management Center (Goler House): Closing at 2 p.m. on December 22 and 29. Closed December 25 and January 1.
  • School of Nursing Admissions Office: Closed December 25 and January 1. Operating remotely December 26–29, with admissions counselors available to respond to calls and emails. Returning to in-person operations January 2.
  • Strong Memorial Hospital Garage Parking Office: Closing at 8 p.m. on December 22 and 29. Open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. December 25 and January 1.
  • Susan B. Anthony Center (Meliora Hall): Closed from December 26 through January 5. It will reopen to students on January 8.
  • URMC Fitness Center: Closed December 25 and January 1.
  • UHS: The River Campus office will be open Monday–Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., from December 26 through January 12, and will be closed December 25 and January 1. The office will close for weekend hours on Saturday, December 23, and resume weekend hours on Saturday, January 20. The office will not have evening hours effective December 20; evening hours will resume Wednesday, January 17. The Medical Center office will remain closed for renovations until further notice. The Eastman School of Music office is closing for Winter Break on December 15 at 4:30 p.m. and will reopen on January 16 at 9 a.m.
