This is the final issue of @Rochester for 2023. Among other items below you’ll find the announcement of the 2024 Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Address speaker, details on a new advanced brain injury rehab unit at Strong Memorial Hospital, and payroll deadlines affected by the New Year’s holiday. Author Rachel Swarns to deliver 2024 MLK Commemorative Address

Rachel Swarns, journalist, author, and an associate professor of journalism at New York University, will deliver the University’s 2024 Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Address on Friday, January 19. The event is free and open to the public. Learn more and register here.

New advanced brain injury rehab unit opens at Strong Memorial Hospital

UR Medicine has opened the Acute Brain Injury NeuroRehabilitation Unit, a new state-of-the-art facility that provides comprehensive rehabilitation and support services for patients recovering from strokes, traumatic brain injuries, and other types of acute acquired brain injuries.


FOR STUDENTS

Shuttle to Roc Holiday Village

Experience winter fun including ice skating, live music, fire pits, and more at Roc Holiday Village today, December 22. Shuttle pickup will be at the Rush Rhees Library bus stop and will run from 5 to 9 p.m. Register on CCC.

Brunch and binge-watch with the Language Center

Join the Language Center on Thursday, December 28, at 3 p.m. for an Asian-American-inspired late brunch and watch a classic Japanese series Gudetama: An Eggcellent Adventure. The show will be shown in Japanese with English subtitles.

New Year’s holiday early payroll deadlines

Due to the University’s observance of the New Year’s holiday on Monday, January 1, the pay date for biweekly hourly will be Friday, January 5. This change affects the payroll processing submission deadline for biweekly hourly payroll for the pay period ending December 30. All time must be entered and approved by noon on Tuesday, January 2. Tips on how timekeepers and employees can prepare for the accelerated deadline can be found on the payroll web page.

‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ workshop

Register to attend “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” two-day workshop, January 8 and 9. In this class, participants learn how to improve performance and results with behaviors that lead to the highest levels of effectiveness and teamwork. By adopting new paradigms, principles, and skills, individuals can increase levels of trust and initiative, and focus on key priorities and effective communication. Participants will also gain access to additional online courses and microlearning through the Franklin Covey All-Access Impact Portal. Learn more and register online; space is limited.

The Friends of Strong Gift Shop by Cloverkey is open every day of the year and will be open on Christmas Day, December 25, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Stop by and grab last-minute gifts and goodies.
