Scientists uncover link between the ocean’s weather and global climate

Led by Hussein Aluie, an associate professor of mechanical engineering and a staff scientist at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, an international team of researchers has found the first direct evidence linking seemingly random weather systems in the ocean with climate on a global scale.

Mobile CPR training station available at Eastview Mall

Last January, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) helped save Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, bringing heightened awareness to the power of CPR during cardiac arrest. UR Medicine and the American Heart Association are expanding CPR readiness in the Rochester and Finger Lakes region with the placement of a mobile, hands-only CPR training station at Eastview Mall, located near the mall entrance to Dick’s House of Sport through January 31.

HR Modernization: New CPM job and pay structures launch January 31

The University is nearing completion of a key milestone in its HR Modernization effort and the completion of the multi-year Career Path Modernization (CPM) project to transform how the University hires, pays, develops, and advances its workforce. Beginning January 31, the University will launch a clear, easy-to-understand job and pay structure that aligns jobs, levels, and positions across the institution to deliver consistency, equity, and transparency to a wide variety of opportunities, roles, and career paths. Managers will begin meeting with staff in mid-January to share individual job information. Staff will have access to their new job information in HRMS including the new job catalog on January 31.

To prepare for these changes, training on the new job and pay structures is available in MyPath by searching for the playlist “CPMPlaylist”. To learn more, visit the updated resources available on the CPM website.

Generative AI teaching workshop

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT are changing the higher educational landscape. This workshop will provide a brief overview of the latest trends and practical applications of generative AI, explore relevant teaching and learning principles, discuss ethical concerns, and devote the majority of the time to Q&A. Cosponsored by the Teaching Center, Academic Honesty, the Department of Computer Science, the River Campus Libraries, and the Writing, Speaking, and Argument Program. Offered twice on Zoom, from 1 to 2 p.m. on January 4 or 5. Register here to attend.

‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ workshop

Register to attend “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” two-day workshop, January 8 and 9. In this class, participants learn how to improve performance and results with behaviors that lead to the highest levels of effectiveness and teamwork. By adopting new paradigms, principles, and skills, individuals can increase levels of trust and initiative, and focus on key priorities and effective communication. Employees and PhD candidates can explore ‘Tools for Data Science’

University employees and PhD candidates seeking a hands-on intro to widely used tools for data science are invited to check out the first day of class for DSCC 401: Tools for Data Science on Wednesday, January 17, from 9 to 10:15 a.m. in Bausch & Lomb Hall, Room 109. Topics for this course include computational hardware and Linux; languages and packages for statistical analysis and visualization; parallel computing and Spark; libraries for machine learning and deep learning; databases including NoSQL; and cloud services.

This course is a first step to transfer toward the Advanced Certificate in Data Science and employees can take it as a non-matriculated student. A prerequisite for taking the course is having introductory programming experience such as Java or Python. To discuss interest in the advanced certificate, contact gids-advcert@rochester.edu

Lecture: ‘Yayoi Kusama—From Avant-Garde to Iconic Collaboration in Fashion’

Join Jeffrey Mayer, a professor of fashion design at Syracuse University, for a lecture at the Memorial Art Gallery on the evolution of Yayoi Kusama as a style icon. Discover how Kusama’s avant-garde sensibilities have continued to captivate the fashion industry and how her collaborations transcend conventional boundaries, creating a lasting impact on the artistic expression within couture. The lecture takes place Thursday, February 8, from 7 to 8 p.m. Learn more and register here.
