Researchers find possible neuromarker for ‘juvenile-onset’ Batten disease

By measuring changes in brain function of participants with CLN3 disease, also known as “juvenile-onset” Batten disease, Rochester researchers have found that the functioning of the auditory sensory memory system—the brain system required for short-term memory recall—appears to decrease as the disease progresses.

Search underway for AVP of public safety and chief public safety officer

A national search is underway for the position of associate vice president of the Department of Public Safety and chief public safety officer. A recently elevated role, the AVP is a leader who ensures a safe and secure environment for students, staff, faculty, patients, and visitors every day, and who works to monitor, respond to, and manage University-wide public safety and security needs in a timely, respectful, and inclusive manner.

The search committee is chaired by Rick Crummins ’84, University deputy general counsel. The search firm of Spelman Johnson is assisting with the recruiting of highly qualified candidates to serve in this key public safety role. Find more information regarding the search and how to apply.

Flags will be lowered for Edward Thorndike

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Thursday, January 18, for Edward Thorndike, a professor emeritus of physics, who died on December 20. Thorndike joined the University faculty in 1961.

“What the Mellon grant does is it allows us to bring the department to full scale, meaning that we can actually hire up to nine to 12 people in a three-year period,” says Jeffrey McCune, the Frederick Douglass Professor and chair of faculty programs and departmental initiatives in the Department of Black Studies. “The Mellon Foundation allows us to walk, perhaps even run, rather than crawl.”

Tuition reimbursement reminder

If you are attending an outside school for the spring 2024 semester, you must submit your tuition reimbursement application to tuitionbenefits@ur.rochester.edu. The application can be found on the tuition benefits website. All applications must be received no later than 30 days after the start of the course.

Rachel Swarns, journalist, author, and an associate professor of journalism at New York University, is this year’s speaker. The event is free and open to the public.

Join the International Community Network

The International Services Office, in collaboration with the Meliora Collective and the International Students and Scholars Advisory Board, announces a new group on the Meliora Collective, the International Community Network.

This group is for all international students, scholars, staff, faculty, and alumni of the University to share their experiences and advice with other members. It is inclusive of all past or present immigrants, visitors, and refugees to the United States regardless of your current immigration status.
