Is BMI accurate? New evidence says no

What is a healthy body mass index (BMI)? It’s complicated, according to Holly Russell, an associate professor of family medicine and at the Center for Community Health and Prevention. “Despite assumptions we’ve come to accept as facts, the evidence linking weight and health is inconsistent,” Russell says. “And using a weight-based tool like BMI to draw conclusions about a person’s health adds to the confusion.”

In today’s issue:

  • The spring semester AlertUR test is scheduled for January 18
  • Events across the University are commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. Day

TODAY'S UPDATES

AlertUR test set for January 18

The spring semester test of AlertUR will be on Thursday, January 18, at 6 p.m. AlertUR is the emergency notification system for the University, including the Medical Center. In the event of an emergency, alerts are sent by voice, text, and email message. The purpose of the test is to activate the AlertUR system and check that you can be reached immediately. Before the January 18 test, students and employees should review their contact information and add a cell phone number if one is not listed or is not current; sign in with your Active Directory ID and password. Employees with an Active Directory ID who do not have a University email address may enter a personal email or phone number to receive emergency alerts. The January 18 test will not disrupt scheduled activities. Find more information on AlertUR here.

ROCHESTER IN THE NEWS

This app could help save your relationship

MSN News, January 11

“Our primary goal was to create an app that couples would intrinsically enjoy using, which would naturally grow in popularity, and thereby organically extend its reach,” says Ronald Rogge, an associate professor of psychology and cocreator of the app. “Using the app with more people in your life is likely to have even stronger individual benefits because we know that connecting with others is a fundamental psychological need.”

Submit nominations for Susan B. Anthony Center awards

The Susan B. Anthony Center is calling for nominations for two annual awards: the Susan B. Anthony Emerging Leader Award and the Susan B. Anthony Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Emerging Leader Award was established in 2018 to recognize a woman leader who is in the early stages of their career. Candidates should have an affiliation with the University (staff, faculty, alumna, or community partners). The Susan B. Anthony Lifetime Achievement Award was established in 1997 to honor and celebrate women whose lives have been enriched by their years at the University and who have, in turn, inspired other women to advance and lead. Nominees should have a strong affiliation with the University and a “lifetime” of significant achievements.

Find more information and nomination forms at the Box links above. Submit your complete nomination in one email, and any questions, to Sebastian Szczebiot by Monday, February 5.
