Manipulated hafnia paves the way for next-gen memory devices

A team of researchers including Sobhit Singh, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering, has outlined progress toward making bulk ferroelectric and antiferroelectric hafnia—an elusive material—available for use in a variety of applications, including the next generation of computing memory.

The ‘mother of all breaches’ national data leak

A national data breach has been recently discovered, with a massive amount of data from previous and new security breaches being leaked. Spanning over 26 billion records of exposed user data from popular platforms including LinkedIn, Twitter, and MyFitnessPal, cybersecurity researchers are calling this, “The Mother of all Breaches”. University IT offers a reminder that the University’s password management tool, Keeper, has tools you can use to check if your data has been compromised. Orientation leader applications due Sunday

Applications for 2024–25 orientation leaders are due Sunday, January 28, by 5 p.m. Undergraduate students in the School of Arts and Sciences and the Hajim School of Engineering can apply for the position on JobLink (Job ID 23355). The orientation leader role is a year-round paid position, responsible for mentoring a cohort of incoming first-year, transfer, and exchange students, as well as developing and leading virtual and in-person programs ahead of their arrival and during their first year on campus. COVID-19 vaccines available at upcoming clinics

The UHS Primary Care team will be holding COVID-19 vaccine clinics on Monday, January 29, and Monday, February 5. Students can sign up for an appointment through UHS Connect. Limited spots are available.

Sign up to participate in Cultural Night

The International Students’ Association (ISA) is organizing Cultural Night on Friday, February 16, at 6 p.m. in Upper Strong Auditorium. Students and student organizations from different cultures and art forms worldwide will showcase their cultural and art form backgrounds to celebrate and spread awareness about the international diversity at the University.

If you’d like to represent your country/culture/art form, sign up here. Anyone can represent their culture/art form and you don’t have to be part of any student organization to participate. The ISO will take care of accommodations, including rehearsals, to be prepared for the event. The deadline to sign up is February 2 by midnight.

Humanities for Life 2024 summer internship program

The Greene Center invites students looking for paid internship opportunities in the arts and humanities to apply to be a part of the Humanities for Life internship program. This exclusive University program matches twenty-eight students with internships at Rochester-based non-profit organizations. Each intern will receive a $5,000 stipend for the summer, internship credit with transcript notation, and a dedicated career advisor. Apply in Handshake by February 25.

Counselors in Residence positions for graduate students

One of the first co-responder programs at a university in the country, Rochester’s Counselors in Residence respond to mental health emergencies after hours and on the weekends with the Department of Public Safety (DPS) or as requested by the University Counseling Center (UCC). Graduate students interested in mental health crisis response are encouraged to apply. Training and supervision are provided by UCC, free housing is provided by the Office of Residential Life, and a stipend is provided by DPS. Free STI testing clinic in February

Did you know that the most common symptom of a sexually transmitted infection is no symptoms at all? Sign up for an appointment at one of the UHS Health Promotion Office’s free STI testing clinics throughout the semester. These clinics are held on Mondays from 4 to 7 p.m. in partnership with Trillium Health. Open to all undergraduate and graduate students.

2023 Form W-2 and fellowship/assistantship information now available

2023 Form W-2s are available online in HRMS. To view or print, log in to HRMS with your NetID and password. Once you are logged in, follow the path: Main Menu > Self-Service > Payroll and Compensation > View W-2/W2-c Forms. If you did not consent to receive your W-2 form electronically through HRMS, it will be mailed out by January 31.

2023 fellowship/assistantship information letters are also available in HRMS. To view or print your letter, log in to HRMS with your NetID and password. Once you are logged in, follow the path: Main Menu > Self-Service > Payroll and Compensation > View Fellowship/Assistantship Statements.

If you have questions about your W-2 or fellowship/assistantship letter, contact the Payroll office by calling (585) 275-2040 or via email.

Temporary closure: Finger Lakes Coffee Roasters in main hospital lobby

The Finger Lakes Coffee Roasters location in the main Strong Memorial Hospital lobby will be closed on Saturday, January 27, and Sunday, January 28, for light renovation work. The coffee stand located nearest the green elevators (100 steps down the hall and to the left) will be open during this time from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Signage directing visitors to the alternative coffee stand will be posted. The main lobby coffee bar will reopen at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, January 29.

Film screening to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day

To commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Office of Equity and Inclusion will host a screening of I Am Here: An Unwavering Spirit on Monday, January 29, in Goergen Hall, Room 101 at 5:30 p.m. The documentary spotlights Ella Blumenthal, one of the oldest survivors of the Holocaust, as she celebrates her 98th birthday and reveals memories of her survival. Light hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be provided. Remembrance candles will be available for guests to take home.
