Study reveals obstacles, opportunities for cancer care in rural upstate New York

New Wilmot Cancer Institute research shows that people struggling with cancer, who live in rural areas outside Rochester, confront transportation issues and unique challenges related to farm life. The study is an important step toward meeting the needs of farmers and other rural-dwelling older adults, who are underserved in cancer care.

Michael Marsh named chief of staff to the president

Michael Marsh, chief operating officer at the Memorial Art Gallery, is joining the President’s Office as chief of staff.  University President Sarah Mangelsdorf announced Marsh’s appointment, which follows a national search. Marsh succeeds Frances Mueller in the role and will start on March 1.

Empowering immigrants and refugees: Program enhances language, health, and employment equity

Part of a grant from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation, a Warner School of Education and Human Development program is helping adults from West Africa, Nepal, Bhutan, and other countries to become better at communicating basic yet critical information in English.

Community Engagement Fair

Interested in learning about how you can give back to the greater Rochester community? Connect with over 20 community partners and community engagement student organizations and find ways to collaborate at the “Community Engagement Fair,” Thursday, February 1, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Barbara J. Burger iZone. Sponsored by the Center for Community Engagement and Students’ Association Government.

Qigong classes on the River Campus

The Mindful University Project is now offering weekly qigong classes, open and free to all University students and R-club members. The class will offer the skills and philosophies of qigong, an ancient system that uses the body, mind, and breath to improve mental and physical health. Classes are held every Monday at 4 p.m. in the Goergen Athletic Center for the spring 2024 semester. You can register here, but walk-ins are also welcome.

Free STI testing clinics in February

Did you know that the most common symptom of a sexually transmitted infection is no symptoms at all? Sign up for an appointment at one of the UHS Health Promotion Office’s free STI testing clinics throughout the semester. These clinics are held on Mondays from 4 to 7 p.m. in partnership with Trillium Health. Open to all undergraduate and graduate students.

Learn how to submit a standout business school application

Join members of Simon Business School’s Admissions and Programs team for “Tips from the Admissions Committee: How to Submit a Standout Application” today, January 30, from noon to 12:30 p.m. An admissions representative will guide prospective applicants through the application process, provide tips on constructing a competitive application, and address the most commonly asked questions about applying to Simon’s part-time programs designed for working professionals. Attendees of the live session will receive an application fee waiver, a $90 value. For those unable to attend, a recording will be emailed to the address used at registration.

Research seminar: ‘Identification-Robust Inference for the LATE with High-Dimensional Covariates’

Join the Goergen Institute for Data Science and the Department of Economics for “Identification-Robust Inference for the LATE with High-Dimensional Covariates,” with Yukun Ma, a PhD candidate in economics at Vanderbilt University. The research seminar will be held today, January 30, at 3:30 p.m. in Harkness Hall, Room 208. A Zoom link is available for virtual attendees.

Eastman Wind Orchestra to be featured at national conference

The Eastman Wind Orchestra has been invited to perform at the 2024 Eastern Division Conference of the College Band Directors National Association. On Friday, February 23, the wind orchestra will perform its conference program at 7:30 p.m. in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, and they will repeat the program at the conference on Saturday, February 24, at 5 p.m. in Cornell University’s Bailey Hall. Both performances are free and open to the public.

Valentine's Day flower arrangements available at Friends of Strong gift shop

Celebrate a loved one on Valentine’s Day with a fresh flower arrangement from the Friends of Strong Gift Shop by Cloverkey. Options include a dozen red roses, single roses, Valentine-themed vase arrangements, and Valentine-themed wrapped bouquets. Stop by the gift shop to preorder and pay until Wednesday, February 7, and pick up at the gift shop after noon on Tuesday, February 13. Colors may vary slightly.
