Why should I give blood?

Blood shortages are occurring more frequently now than ever before. Neil Blumberg, director of the Transfusion Medicine Unit, Blood Bank, and Stem Cell Storage Facility, and Michael Vella, trauma medical director at the Kessler Trauma Center, share five unexpected facts about donated blood and why a quick stop at your local Red Cross is a true lifesaver.

IN MEMORIAM

Flags will be lowered for Jack Chen

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Tuesday, February 20, for Jack Chen, an assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, who died on January 20. Chen joined the University faculty in 2022.

  • A Storytelling Workshop takes place on Monday, February 19, at 6:30 p.m. in Dewey Hall, Room 2-110E. Learn the best ways to take your global experience and turn it into a story for interviews, networking, or sharing with peers.
  • The Education Abroad Story Slam is on Thursday, February 29, at 7 p.m. in the May Room, Wilson Commons. Share your own story or attend to hear global narratives from study abroad returnees, international students, and other members of the Rochester community—with guest performances from Salseros and Trebellious.

Submit nominations for the Satcher Awards

The Center for Community Health & Prevention is accepting nominations for the 15th annual Dr. David Satcher Community Health Improvement Awards. Nominations are due by noon Monday, March 25. New this year, a team category has been added to the staff, junior faculty, and senior faculty award categories. The awards reflect the mission of the Center for Community Health & Prevention and the Medical Center to develop and expand community-University partnerships that support community-engaged research and interventions that reduce health inequities and improve communities’ health.

Find the perfect Simon part-time program for you

Learn which Simon Business School program—Executive MBA, Professional MBA, Online MS in Business Analytics and Applied AI, and MS in Medical Management—can best help you achieve your personal and professional goals at the webinar “Deciding Between Simon’s Part-Time Programs” today, February 13, from noon to 12:30 p.m. A Simon Admissions team member will provide an overview of each program, including information about the mode of delivery, the tuition cost, scholarship opportunities, and more. Attendees of the live session will receive an application fee waiver, a $90 value. For those unable to attend, a recording will be emailed to the address used at registration.

Ash Wednesday services and events

The following Ash Wednesday events will take place on Wednesday, February 14.

  • Chaplaincy Services at Strong Memorial Hospital will have ashes available for all staff, faculty, students, patients, and families in the Interfaith Chapel (1-6215G) from 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Individuals, units, and departments can also call communications (585-275-2222) for the on-call chaplain or the chaplain’s office (585-275-2187) to receive ashes. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and voicemail is checked throughout the day.
  • The Catholic Newman Community will distribute ashes at the Interfaith Chapel from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Full mass will be held in the sanctuary at 12:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. with distribution of ashes available there as well.

‘Startup Sprint’ entrepreneurship workshop series

Startup Sprint” is the newest workshop series from the Ain Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, with the first session happening on Thursday, February 15, from 5 to 6 p.m. in Genesee Hall, Room 325. The hands-on Competitive Landscape Analysis workshop, led by Fernanda Sesto ’24S (MS), qualifies for Level 1 credit in the student Medallion Program. Gain insights into your market and competition, identify strategies for differentiation, and create a comprehensive analysis to inform your startup’s direction. Nominations open until February 16 for ‘The Laurel’

Nominations are now being accepted for “The Laurel,” an award established in 2022 in honor of Laurel Contomanolis’s retirement as executive director of Residential Life and Housing Services. The award celebrates the legacy of her 38 years of service to and compassion for students living on campus. The distinction will be presented each April at the Residence Hall Association Banquet to the group or organization whose program best exemplifies Contomanolis’ hallmark traits of inclusion, collaboration creativity, fundamental fairness, and tenacity that contribute to a meaningful on-campus living experience for students at the University. Please note, this can be an informal group. Nominations are due Friday, February 16.

RN First Assistant virtual open house

Expand your nursing role with the School of Nursing’s RN First Assistant program, which prepares CNORs (Certified Nurse-Operating Room) to take on an expanded role and empowers APRNs (Advanced Practice Registered Nurses) to follow their surgical patients throughout the perioperative experience. The five-week intensive course features interactive online learning activities, a day of hands-on learning and simulation, and a 200-hour clinical internship, to help you discover how to expand the impact of your nursing practice and improve patient care. Applications for summer 2024 are due March 15. Learn more about the program and application process at a virtual open house on Wednesday, February 21, from 1 to 2 p.m. Register online.
