Reshaping our understanding of granular systems

Researchers including Rachel Glade, an assistant professor of earth and environmental sciences and of mechanical engineering; Fernando David Cúñez, a former postdoctoral research associate in Glade’s lab and now a postdoctoral research associate at Rochester Institute of Technology; and Div Patel ’24, studied granular materials and are uncovering the unexpected role of grain shape in the mixing of granular systems such as pharmaceuticals, cereal, and landslides.

Rochester named a top producer of Fulbright students

The University has been named a top producer of Fulbright US Student Grant Program recipients for the 2023–24 academic year. Twelve Rochester students and alumni were selected to study abroad out of 40 applicants and 22 semifinalists from the University. This marks the seventh time in the past 10 years that Rochester has been designated a Fulbright top producer. A complete list can be found on the Fulbright program website and the Chronicle of Higher Education website. Juniors, seniors, graduate students, and alumni interested in applying for a 2025–26 Fulbright should contact the Student Fellowships Office.

Power plant pilot program concludes with strong energy savings results

In the summer of 2022, Energy Services and Sustainability launched a fault detection and diagnostics pilot program to test the building analytics software’s capability in terms of detecting and diagnosing faulty HVAC equipment and operations. Read more about the program in this week’s Go Green blog post and how, with a proactive approach to HVAC maintenance and space comfort, the University sees an increase in energy efficiency, reduced costs, and lower carbon emissions.

Schwartz Discover Grant applications, ‘Ask an Alum’ workshop

The Schwartz Discover Grant application period for summer research funding is now open. All current University undergraduate students who will be returning in the fall semester and are planning to do unpaid research this summer under a University supervisor may apply for the Discover Grant for summer undergraduate research funding. The application deadline is March 3.

Learn more about the Schwartz Discover Grant at an “Ask an Alum” workshop where students bring their questions and application drafts for feedback from prior award recipients. Attend the workshop on Thursday, February 15 in the Humanities Center, Rush Rhees Library, Conference Room D, between 5 and 7 p.m. Pizza will be served. Pre-registration is appreciated but not required.  Contact the Office of Undergraduate Research via email with questions.

Future Faculty workshops

Designed collaboratively by faculty from each of the University’s schools, the Future Faculty workshop series aims to prepare future faculty and to give graduates an edge in the academic marketplace. Register here for upcoming sessions.

Undergraduate writing groups

Have writing to do? Join a writing group led by the Writing Fellows. These structured writing sessions meet weekly for two hours and are designed to support your writing process through guidance, accountability, and community. Bring any kind of academic, professional, or creative writing. Open to undergraduate students in the School of Arts & Sciences and the Hajim School of Engineering. Dependent child tuition application reminder

Is your dependent child attending the University for the spring 2024 semester? If you have not already done so, submit your dependent child tuition waiver application in HRMS. Eligibility requirements and additional information can be found on the tuition benefits website.

Workshop on engaging students with classroom questions

A one-hour Zoom workshop, open to all University instructors, faculty, and staff, provides strategies and best practices for engaging students in meaningful learning through the effective design and implementation of question-based activities. Register here for the workshop, scheduled for Friday, February 16, at noon.

Gut health, high protein foods, sugar addiction, and more

Beginning Tuesday, February 20, Well-U’s next Nutrition Basics program will help participants navigate the latest nutrition buzzwords, learn about essential nutrients, and discover how the pieces all fit together with regular dietary needs. Get registered here for the five-session series and earn $100 upon completion.

Attend the ‘Publish, Don’t Perish!’ workshop

Unsure of where to publish your research? Register to attend the “Publish, Don’t Perish!” workshop on Monday, February 26, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Zoom to learn some tips and tricks to finding the best outlet for your work and tools to navigate the publication process with confidence. Information will be shared on the importance of establishing your ORCID profile. This workshop is part of the Rochester Year One series, designed for new and early-career faculty.

Support student organizations at the Shops @ Wilco

Students, staff, and faculty can stop by the Shops @ Wilco this week for a full roster of student organizations fundraising with a variety of items at different price points. Organizations include After Hours, Alpha Kappa Psi, Royals Dance team, RICE crew, Alpha Phi, and Ballet Performance Group. Shops @ Wilco is located on the first floor of Wilson Commons.


SOCIAL MEDIA SPOTLIGHT

Rochester’s squash team won its fifth consecutive Liberty League championship on Sunday, defeating host St. Lawrence University 7-2. The team now has its sights set on Philadelphia, for the upcoming College Squash Association Team Divisional Championships. Go, Jackets!
