For whom the bells toll: Siblings honor late father

A bench outside the Goergen Athletic Center stands as a memorial to Scott Greif, who discovered the University for his three children, Hudson Greif ’27, Braden Greif ’24, and Nina Greif ’25 (above). The bench was purchased with a memorial fund created by his friends to ensure that his presence would always be felt on campus.

‘Paws for Stress Relief’ at Eastman

Feeling stressed? Stop by the Orchestra Pit in the Eastman Student Living Center and meet therapy dogs today, February 15, from 6 to 7:15 p.m. Peer Health Advocates will also be there with giveaways including lavender sachets and stress balls. Brought to you by the UHS Health Promotion Office.

Inaugural ‘Women and Diversity in Tech Speaker’ today

Join the Greene Center and partners today, February 15, for a moderated discussion and open Q&A with Manali Maity ’19S (MBA), from Google, and Jennifer Allen ’97, ’10S (MBA), from GE Renewable Energy. The event takes place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Wegmans Hall, Room 1400, and is ideal for anyone interested in technology, data science, engineering, business, working for Google, GE, Xerox, or L3Harris, and the experiences of women, minorities, and international students in the technology field.

Apply for the Institute for Human Health and the Environment Exploration Grant

The Institute for Human Health and the Environment Exploration Grant is a scholarship to provide funds for the promotion of transdisciplinary research experiences for University undergraduate students who wish to conduct research related to the impact of environmental exposures on human health and potential underlying mechanisms by which environmental factors affect health; or social, economic, and cultural contributors to the creation or resolution of environmental health problems. Students from arts, humanities, or STEM backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must be Rochester undergraduate students and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 15, at 11:59 p.m.

Meeting of Medical Center Latino faculty

Since 2022, Latino faculty members at the Medical Center have come together to get to know each other and the work that they do. Sponsored by the Office of Equity and Inclusion, the next meeting will be held on Thursday, February 29, at 5 p.m. in the Saunders Research Building atrium. Latino faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, and residents are invited to join. For more information, email Francisco Cartujano.

Search enhanced for University Archives and special collections

Digital Initiatives and Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation recently completed work that has made searching the University’s archives and special collections more like searching the library’s catalog through DiscoverUR. Featuring a new user-friendly layout, the interface offers a more robust search, including the ability to filter results by subject, library, language, keyword, and date. It’s available now at archives.lib.rochester.edu.

Happy hour with the Language Center

Join the Language Center to learn about the benefits and power of language learning in academics, while you enjoy some mocktails and snacks. The event takes place today, February 15, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the Welles-Brown Room, Rush Rhees Libary.

Simon Games information session

Simon Business School’s virtual business simulation competition—Simon Games—is back this spring for candidates interested in three of Simon’s part-time programs: Executive MBA, Professional MBA, and Online MS in Business Analytics and Applied AI. Players will build their résumés, engage in experiential learning (a popular business school learning model), gain valuable experience in a simulated business environment, and more. The grand prize winner from each player group will receive a full-tuition scholarship if they enroll in 2024. Spring 2024 community dialogues

Join the Office of Equity and Inclusion’s Restorative Practices team for one or more community dialogues, open to all University students, staff, and faculty. Come together as one University community to share both the challenges and the joys that you experience. Each dialogue will be facilitated in a circle format and participants will help shape the topics.

  • Virtual sessions will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on February 19, March 13, April 17, and May 15.
  • In-person sessions will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on February 27, March 7, April 11, and May 2.

Mindfulness class for the University's Black community

Join the “Meditative Guide for Us” class, crafted for the needs and experiences of the Black community. Offered by the Mindful University Project, the class is centered on fostering self-discovery and self-care through deep breathing, visualization, and guided meditation. Instructor Deontae McLachlan addresses unique challenges, drawing from personal experiences as a Black individual who has personally benefitted from the practice of mindfulness. Stay Woke: A Meditation Guide for the Rest of Us by Justin Michael Williams and For Indigenous Minds Only: A Decolonization Handbook edited by Waziyatawin and Michael Yellow Bird serve as the foundation for the class. Sessions take place on February 28 and March 6 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Douglass Community Room. Snacks will be offered. Those who attend both sessions will be able to receive a free yoga mat, meditation cushion, or a copy of either book. Registration required.

Dyson pediatric grand rounds lecture and community health symposium

The 24th annual Anne E. Dyson Memorial Grand Rounds and Community Health Symposium presents “Promoting Physical Fitness Opportunities for All Children” with Sue Gasparino, director of Child and Adolescent Programming at the Community Health & Prevention, and special guest Addie Verwey, an assistant professor of pediatrics. The event takes place on Wednesday, March 6, at 8 a.m. in the Class of ’62 Auditorium (G-9425), Medical Center. Learn more and register here.
