Planning underway for the upcoming solar eclipse

A University committee is working to plan and coordinate events for the historic total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, including lectures, opportunities for scientific exploration, and creative expression. If your unit or department is planning an eclipse-related event, email the information to eclipse2024@rochester.edu by February 23 so that logistics can be planned for and to ensure the event is on the University calendar. Also note that space reservations, including for outdoor spaces, must be made using the standard Event Management System. Student organizations planning events should email wcsa@rochester.edu. The committee will also be coordinating the distribution of University solar eclipse glasses.

Please note that classes will be canceled from noon to 5 p.m. on Monday, April 8, for the eclipse. Classes starting at 4:50 p.m. will take place as usual. Students should direct any questions to their instructors.

More details about events, alternative learning experiences, viewing opportunities, and the distribution of glasses will be shared in the coming weeks.

Check your inbox for the National College Health Assessment

Students can check their email beginning today, February 19, to see if they’ve been selected to complete the National College Health Assessment. Responses help University Health Service better understand student well-being and will be used to develop new programs and services. In previous years, the results from this survey led to the launch of free STI testing clinics, the Safe Sex Express program, the Mindful University Project, and more. All students who complete the survey will be entered into a random drawing to win one of five $100 gift cards to the Barnes & Noble College Town Bookstore. For all the details, visit the UHS website.

Workshop: ‘ROC your LinkedIn Profile’

The Greene Center invites students to join a Zoom workshop on Tuesday, February 20, from 7 to 8 p.m. with Tarin Rickett ’18, a staff software engineer from LinkedIn, to learn how to network, express your achievements, and get discovered by recruiters from any industry. You’ll gain a better understanding of your professional brand, how and why to make the most of your LinkedIn profile, and how to leverage it to help connect you to opportunities.

Undergraduate Writing Contest

The Writing, Speaking, and Argument Program’s annual Undergraduate Writing Contest provides an opportunity to recognize outstanding student writing. Monetary prizes will be given to the best submissions in five categories; prizes will also be given to the best multimodal compositions and projects. The contest is open to undergraduate students in the School of Arts & Sciences and the Hajim School of Engineering. Graduate students and faculty members from the disciplines judge the work and select at least one winner and one honorable mention per category; judging is blind. Winners will be recognized at the Writing Colloquium Awards Dinner.

Submit up to one paper or project per category. Entries may be work for a course you are taking this semester or work you completed during a previous semester. Submissions should not exceed twenty-five pages. Submissions are due by February 21 at 4 p.m. and can be submitted online. Further details about the contest can be found on the Writing Program’s website. Contact wsap@ur.rochester.edu with questions.
