The Eastman Community Music School, together with support from Eastman Performing Arts Medicine and the Medical Center, introduces a new intergenerational chorus for those affected by Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia. FOR STUDENTS

Learn how to network successfully

Students can join the Greene Center on Wednesday, February 21, from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Havens Lounge in Wilson Commons to learn valuable tips and strategies for networking at events—including how to master the art of follow-up. The event is designed to help give you the tools to network with confidence for the Rochester Connects event happening Wednesday, February 28, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Mercantile on Main. Pizza will be provided.

Apply to become a writing fellow

The Writing and Speaking Center is currently accepting applications to become a writing fellow. Undergraduate students who are hired as writing fellows work during evening hours as writing tutors for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as other members of the University community. Students who are selected through the application process are enrolled in the training course, WRTG 245: Advanced Writing and Peer Tutoring, before beginning tutoring the following semester. Applications are due Wednesday, February 28. Email Eric Kukenberger with questions.

Global Photo Contest now open

The 2024 Global Photo Contest is now open. Any student who studied abroad during 2023 is eligible to submit for the Center for Education Abroad side and any current international or exchange student is eligible for the International Service Office side of the contest. Each student is limited to three photos in total for submission. The deadline for submissions is March 25. Check out the newly reimagined categories, details on the contest, and how to submit photos.

Program provides free safer-sex supplies for students

You can have safer sex supplies delivered straight to your on-campus mailbox by placing an order through Safe Sex Express. Open to all students with an on-campus mailbox.

Symposium to help bridge work between Medical Center, River Campus

Join the Center for Community Health & Prevention, the Office of Health Equity Research, and the Warner School of Education and Human Development for “UR Breaking Down Silos: A Joint Symposium,” at 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 18, at the Hilton Garden Inn on Celebration Drive. University faculty, staff, and doctoral students are invited to the half-day forum, complete with an in-person discussion, poster contest, and “speed dating” session to meet your potential next collaborator.

David Linehan, Medical Center CEO and dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry, and Sarah Peyre, dean of the Warner School of Education and Human Development, will deliver opening remarks. A keynote by Silvia Sorensen, an associate professor of counseling and human development and of ophthalmology, will follow.

Register by March 1 to be notified of acceptance in the poster contest and to participate in the speed dating session. Learn more and register here.

Chorus for adults living with Alzheimer’s, caregivers

The Eastman Community Music School, together with support from Eastman Performing Arts Medicine and the Medical Center, announces the launch of ENCORE, an intergenerational chorus to benefit people with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia in the early-to-mid stages and their caregivers. ENCORE aims to provide a structured musical experience for a vulnerable population that could benefit from a nonpharmacological approach to a deadly disease. The ENCORE chorus will start rehearsals in March and is accepting both registrations and volunteers.

Workshop: AI Ethics, Privacy, and Security

The Ain Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation presents the next session of its hands-on AI Workshop series on Wednesday, February 21, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Wegmans Hall 1400. Panelists will discuss “AI Ethics, Privacy, and Security” and there will be time for an audience Q&A. Attend in person or via Zoom. Register in advance here. Send questions to AinCFE@rochester.edu.

Love data with the River Campus Libraries

The River Campus Libraries are immersed in programming for Love Data Month. Attend various workshops on topics such as Excel and OpenRefine, social events, and a panel from faculty involved in researching data with a lens of diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and social justice.
