Elizabeth Kipp Campbell named associate vice president for human subject protection

Elizabeth Kipp Campbell, director of the Office of Research Ethics and Compliance at MaineHealth in Portland, Maine, has been appointed associate vice president for human subject protection, effective March 1. Reporting to the vice president for research, Kipp Campbell will lead the Office for Human Subject Protection, which ensures that the University protects the rights, welfare, and safety of all research participants.


IN MEMORIAM

English professor Morris Eaves remembered

Morris Eaves, a professor of English, was known within the University community as much for his institutional knowledge as his devotion to the institution. Eaves, whose groundbreaking effort to digitize the illustrated poems of William Blake enabled widespread scholarship of the British poet’s work, died on February 25. University flags on Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital will be lowered for Eaves on March 19.

Education Abroad ‘Story Slam’

Join the Center for Education Abroad for a night of storytelling today, February 29, at 7 p.m. in the May Room. Share your own global story or attend as an audience member; enjoy guest performances from Salseros and Trebellious. Reserve your spot to attend as an audience member or story slammer. All attendees can enjoy Insomnia Cookies, plus the first 25 students will receive a free bubble tea.

Eating disorder screenings

As part of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, the University Counseling Center will provide free, private, brief eating disorder screenings to students on Friday, March 1, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Welles-Brown Room, Rush Rhees Library.

Last chance to apply to the New York Business Plan Competition

Applications are closing soon for the New York Business Plan Competition, an intercollegiate entrepreneurial pitch competition. Take your business idea to the next level and apply by March 1. Reach out to the Ain Center with questions.

Drama House tour and trivia

Drama House will host a trivia night on Sunday, March 3, from 4 to 6 p.m. Play trivia, get a tour, meet current house and e-board members, enjoy snacks, win prizes, and more.

‘Paws for Stress Relief’ with therapy dogs

Stop by the Goergen Athletic Center and meet therapy dogs on Monday, March 4, from 6 to 7:15 p.m. Peer Health Advocates will also be there with giveaways including lavender sachets and stress balls. Brought to you by the UHS Health Promotion Office.

Emergency Department Research Associate Program accepting applications

Undergraduate students of all years and majors can apply for the Emergency Department Research Associate Program’s fall 2024 internship. Structured as a four-credit course through the Department of Public Health, the internship combines classroom instruction with hands-on experience in the Emergency Department to develop competencies in the mechanics of clinical research, including topics on research design, human subjects protections, and informed consent. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 22, at noon. Contact Brenda Hernandez-Romero via email or by calling (585) 275-1173 with questions.

COVID-19 vaccine appointments available

Students are still able to receive a COVID-19 vaccine at University Health Service before Spring Break. Call UHS at (585) 275-2662 to schedule an appointment.

Mental health counseling support

Connect with Madison Murphy, a graduate student in mental health counseling located in the Burgett Intercultural Center, to discuss any challenges you may be facing. Murphy is a counselor-in-training offering free one-on-one listening sessions to any student who wants to work through anxiety and stress, or if you need a judgment-free space to process whatever is on your mind. Register your department for eyeglasses recycling competition

In conjunction with Campus Race to Zero Waste, University Facilities and Services is collecting eyeglasses for donation to Lions Club International throughout March. Eyeglasses will be cleaned and packaged for people around the world. Anyone can donate and departments can participate in a friendly competition to collect unwanted eyeglasses. Go here for more information. Departments are to register by March 1 to compete for prizes.

Register for a business plan writing workshop

“Startup Sprint” is the Ain Center’s newest workshop series, with the next session happening today, February 29, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Genesee Hall, Room 325. This hands-on business plan writing workshop led by Brandon Burris, a PhD candidate in biochemistry and molecular biology, with support from Simon Business School master’s student Fernanda Sesto, will guide you through crafting a solid business plan. For students, all workshops in this series qualify for Level 1 Medallion Credit and will help you prepare to compete in one of the upcoming competitions. Visit Hartnett Gallery exhibits

Friday, March 1, is the last chance to experience the Elemental exhibit by the Photography Club at the Hartnett Gallery. The next exhibit, Time Tripper by Alice Pixley Young, sponsored by the Gallery Curation Committee, begins March 7 with an opening reception and artist talk from 4 to 6 p.m. The Hartnett Gallery is open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and is located on the second floor of Wilson Commons.

Lecture: ‘Decolonial Feminism in Question’

Breny Mendoza, a professor of gender and women’s studies and academic lead of the MA program in diverse community development leadership at California State University, Northridge, presents the lecture “Decolonial Feminism in Question” on Monday, March 4, at 5 p.m. in the Gamble Room, Rush Rhees Library. Screening of the film Navalny

Attend a film screening of Navalny on Tuesday, March 5, at 7 p.m. in Lattimore Hall, Room 201. The event will open with introductory remarks by Dmitry Bykov, the University’s inaugural Scholar in Exile. Find the movie trailer here.

Walk or run the J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge

The J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge will be held on Thursday, May 23, at 7 p.m. at Innovative Field. Participants can walk or run the 3.5-mile race with the University team. The entry fee is $43 and includes two shirts. A corporate event, this is only open to University employees and graduate students. Register here under the “University of Rochester” team by April 24. The University will submit teams of the fastest runners, but everyone can walk or run at their own pace. Contact Christina Davidson with questions.
