Shielding kids with intellectual and developmental disabilities from COVID-19

During the pandemic, researchers across the Medical Center teamed up with the Mary Cariola Center to study ways to prevent COVID-19 infections among children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The team’s latest study shows that airflow and filtration in schools may help.

IN MEMORIAM

Flags will be lowered for Ernest Bates

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Thursday, May 16, for University Life Trustee Ernest (Ernie) Bates ’62M (MD), who died on March 19. Bates served twice as a voting trustee, first elected in 1992, and was engaged with many board and alumni committees.


UNITED WAY

Make communities safer with your pledge

One of many ways pledging to the United Way helps the community is by supporting programs that make communities safer by improving access to affordable housing and outdoor spaces for families and individuals. Join the many who have already pledged and you’ll be eligible for one more week of prize drawings. If you are a continuous donor, you have until May 1 to make changes to your pledge online.

Language career opportunities with the NSA

Are you passionate about using your foreign language skills to impact the world? Join this session hosted by the Greene Center and the Language Center to learn about language-related career opportunities with the US National Security Agency. Discover how you can apply your skills to aid in national defense, as well as open the door to other opportunities. The session takes place today, April 11, from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Gamble Room, Rush Rhees Library.

‘One Community Dialogue: Free Speech On Campus’

The Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center presents “One Community Dialogue: Free Speech On Campus” on Friday, April 12, from 4 to 6 p.m. in Douglass Commons, Room 305. Pizza and light refreshments will be provided. All students are invited to talk about personal, communal, or current climate issues and concerns. This event is cosponsored by the Students’ Association and the University Counseling Center.

Mental Health Destigmatization Fair for international students

International students can join the UHS Health Promotion Office for a Mental Health Destigmatization Fair to learn more about ways to promote mental well-being and minimize stigmatization. The event features sessions around mental health topics, discussions, and relaxing activities like tote bag painting. It’s also an opportunity to learn about cultural aspects that contribute to mental health stigmatization from international students’ perspectives. The event takes place on Friday, April 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Welles-Brown Room, Rush Rhees Library, and is cosponsored by the International Services Office.

Share feedback on sexual and reproductive health services

University undergraduate and graduate students can join staff from University Health Service to share feedback and ask questions about sexual health and reproductive services. Your feedback will directly impact work done at UHS to improve sexual health and reproductive services over the next year. Free pizza will be provided. Register to attend on Wednesday, April 24, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Burgett Intercultural Center. Douglass Commons.

Arthur Satz Creativity Forum

The inaugural Arthur Satz Creativity Forum focuses on how music lives everywhere and how its creative cultivation is a key part of the humanities. The event takes place Saturday, April 13, from 3 to 5 p.m. in Dewey Hall, Room 2162. Admission is free but a reservation is required. Learn about the speakers here.

MK Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence spring fundraiser

Attend the MK Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence at its spring fundraiser, “Soulforce,” on Saturday, April 13. Funds raised will benefit the center’s community gardening efforts, the carceral system, and the Rochester City School District. Find more details including donation structure here.

Symposium celebrates Janet Berlo

“Confluences: A Celebration of Janet Berlo” gathers prominent figures in Indigenous studies to celebrate Janet Catherine Berlo’s distinguished and ongoing accomplishments with a symposium; conversations about Indigenous studies, curation, collaboration, and writing. The conference begins at 9:45 a.m. on Friday, April 19, in the Hawkins-Carlson Room, Rush Rhees Library. Learn more about the event.

Register by April 24 for the Corporate Challenge

The J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge will be held on Thursday, May 23, at 7 p.m. at Innovative Field. Participants can walk or run the 3.5-mile race with the University team. The entry fee is $43 and includes two shirts. As a corporate event, this is only open to University employees and graduate students. Register here under the “University of Rochester” team by April 24. Everyone can walk or run at their own pace and after the event, the University will submit the fastest teams. Holocaust Remembrance Day concert at Eastman

Eastman School of Music faculty members and students will join the worldwide observance of Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) by presenting a concert titled “A Time to Remember…” on Sunday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Kilbourn Hall, Eastman Theatre.
