Physicists reach milestone in understanding the universe’s fundamental forces

Building on their extensive involvement with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), a Rochester team led by Arie Bodek, the George E. Pake Professor of Physics, has made groundbreaking measurements of the electroweak mixing angle. The achievement strengthens an understanding of particle physics.

Undergraduate Writing Colloquium contest winners

With nearly 300 submissions, this year’s Undergraduate Writing Colloquium contest from the Writing, Speaking, and Argument Program had a record-setting number of submissions. Graduate student and faculty judges selected first-place and honorable mention winners in five categories: humanities, natural and applied sciences, multimodal projects, social sciences, and WRTG. The winners’ names and works can be found here.

Workshop on identifying your strengths

Have you wondered who you are and what makes you unique? The CliftonStrengths assessment answers those questions. Join Interim Dean of Students Anne-Marie Algier in discovering what you bring to the table at the “Identifying Your Strengths” workshop on Monday, April 22, from 5 to 6 p.m. in Genesee Hall, Room 325. Register by April 15. Students will be sent a code and log-in information for an assessment to take before the session.

Last chance: Perform or host an event during Fall Welcome Week

Fall 2024 Welcome Week program proposals and performance interest forms for School of Arts & Sciences and Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences undergraduate student organizations are due Monday, April 15, by 11:59 p.m. Plan and host a program or activity for new students or perform at select events throughout the week with your student organization. Ain Center pitch competitions

The Ain Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation is hosting two pitch competitions for Rochester students this semester. The Forbes Entrepreneurial Competition is open to undergraduate engineering students and the Ain Business Model Competition is open to all students of any program. Enter the fast track with the Guaranteed Rochester Accelerated Degree in Education (GRADE) program at the Warner School of Education and Human Development. GRADE offers a streamlined five-year BA/BS + MS program; admission to the Warner School; quality liberal arts education paired with specialized educator preparation; specialization options in teaching, counseling, human development, applied behavior analysis, educational policy, higher education, and more. You’ll also find a mentorship program, tailored advising, and community activities with other GRADE students and Warner faculty and staff. Register for CASC 104: Designing Your Life

No matter what stage you’re at in your journey or what interests you may have, the Greene Center’s exploratory one-credit course, CASC 104: Designing Your Life, could be a great option for you. The course is designed to have a little more structure and support for you to explore your interests, make sense of the resources and opportunities available at Rochester, and begin crafting career goals unique to your interests and experiences. Attend today's Undergraduate Research expo

Celebrating Research Week concludes today, April 12, with the Research Poster Expo in Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons, from 1:30 to 3:30. p.m. The Undergraduate Research Exposition is a University-wide event in which Rochester students at all levels and in all areas of study are invited to present their investigative and creative work. An awards ceremony will immediately follow to recognize the best posters and best symposium speakers from last week’s Research Symposium. All are welcome to attend. Can’t make it in person? ‘Spring Explorations and Experimental Dances’ concert

The Program of Dance and Movement presents the S.E.E.D (Spring Explorations and Experimental Dances) concert, featuring student and faculty choreographers, as well as lighting and costume design by student designers. Performances are today, April 11, and Saturday, April 12, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, April 13, at 2 p.m. in Spurrier Dance Studio. Find tickets here.

Do you need help writing a data management and sharing plan for the National Institutes of Health or the National Science Foundation? Would you like to know more about reproducibility, sharing data, and the various tools the University offers? Register to attend one or all of the webinars as part of the spring 2024 Data Management and Sharing series. The University Libraries Data Services Team is available to answer questions, provide advice via one-on-one consultations, review data management and sharing plans, and assist with using the UR Research Repository, LabArchives, and Open Scholarship Framework (OSF).
