Microplastics research hub aims to unravel health impact in changing climate

A collaboration between the University and Rochester Institute of Technology, the Lake Ontario Center for Microplastics and Human Health in a Changing Environment will study the lifecycle of microplastics, including their origin as plastic waste, distribution and movement in the Great Lakes freshwater ecosystem, and human exposure and health impact. The research will also focus on how climate change could intensify the environmental and health threats of microplastics.

Eastman Leadership Academy for emerging music professionals

Collaborate with similarly passionate and dedicated college juniors, seniors, and graduate students while working with world-class musicians, educators, and leaders. Eastman Leadership Academy, June 3–7, provides a deep dive into leadership and entrepreneurship through immersive, interactive, and participatory workshops and learning activities. Thanks to a sponsorship from Yamaha, admitted students will receive a full-tuition scholarship. April 26 is the extended deadline for University and Eastman School of Music students. Host a student for Commencement

Due to visa restrictions, high travel costs, and other factors, some graduating students may not have family present at Commencement to celebrate their accomplishments. University faculty and staff can fill in for a family by hosting a graduating student. If you’re able to attend a departmental ceremony on Saturday, May 18, or Sunday, May 19, can take lots of pictures, and would like to get to know one of the students, express your interest here. Strategies for maximizing medical insurance coverage

The Office of Human Resources offers the following strategies for maximizing your medical insurance coverage:

  • Know your coverage details: Take the time to familiarize yourself with the specifics of your medical coverage.
  • Choose in-network providers: Whenever possible, select healthcare providers who are in-network with your insurance plan.
  • Schedule preventive care visits: Take advantage of your insurance coverage for preventive care services. Tier 1 and Tier 2 providers are covered at 100 percent, no deductible.

Celebrate Biomedical Research Awareness Day today

The international research community marks Biomedical Research Awareness Day to honor and raise awareness of the vital role animals play in biomedical research. Visit the Animal Resource, Room G-6707, School of Medicine and Dentistry, today, April 18, for giveaways and brochures between 8 and 11 a.m. and 1 and 4 p.m.

You can also attend the Biomedical Research Awareness Day webinar “The Importance of Animals in Addressing the Drug Abuse Crisis” in the Class of ’62 Auditorium (G-9425), from noon to 1 p.m.

ROCTalks annual event

ROCTalks is hosting its annual event on Sunday, April 21, in the May Room. This event aims to allow the University community to speak up and have their voices heard on any topic of interest. The event will be held in a TEDx-style with speakers discussing ideas of interest, innovative concepts, and diverse thoughts. Faculty, undergraduate students, and graduate students are all welcome to join.

Opioid overdose prevention training

Join Strong Recovery for opioid overdose prevention training on Tuesday, April 23, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Gowen Room, Wilson Commons. All attendees over age 18 will receive a free Narcan kit. Registration is required, and the training is open to all students, faculty, and staff. Brought to you by the UHS Health Promotion Office and the Office of the Dean of Students.

Annual economics lecture on inequality, redistribution, and the Labour Market

Richard Blundell, the David Ricardo Chair of Political Economy at University College London, gives the annual Lionel W. McKenzie Lecture, hosted by the Department of Economics, on Wednesday, April 24, from 4:45 to 6 p.m. in Wegmans Hall, Room 1400. Learn more here.

‘Bridging Continents: Exploring South Asian Art’ at MAG

Join Madhuvanti Ghose, the Alsdorf Associate Curator of Indian, Southeast Asian, and Himalayan Art at the Art Institute of Chicago, for a discussion on the artistic traditions of the Vaishnava Pushtimarg sect. Based in the temple town of Nathdwara in India, these hereditary artists are renowned for having preserved painting traditions in an unbroken legacy for more than four centuries. “Bridging Continents: Exploring South Asian Art” takes place a the Memorial Art Gallery on Saturday, April 27, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Learn more and find tickets here.
