Stanford’s Laura Carstensen ’78 to deliver 2024 Commencement address

University of Rochester Commencement Weekend speaker: Laura Carstensen

Laura Carstensen ’78, a Stanford University research psychologist and internationally renowned expert on aging and the effects on the well-being of extended lifetimes, will deliver the 2024 address at the University-wide Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 17. Carstensen will receive an honorary doctor of science degree at the ceremony.

Three Rochester faculty join ranks of AAAS fellows

Gilbert ‘Rip’ Collins, Douglas Portman, and Michael Welte

Three University faculty members have been elected as 2023 fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science: Gilbert (Rip) Collins, the Tracy Hyde Harris Professor of Mechanical Engineering; a professor of physics and astronomy; and associate director of science, technology, and academics at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics; Douglas Portman, the Donald M. Foster, MD Distinguished Professor in Biomedical Genetics and a professor of neuroscience and biology; and Michael Welte, a professor of biology. Warner School to host Fulbright teachers for a second year

The Warner School of Education and Human Development has received funding to continue hosting the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program for International Teachers. Rochester is one of only two universities nationwide selected as a host institution for the fall 2024 semester. The program facilitates professional development opportunities for international primary and secondary teachers selected as Fulbright recipients in their home countries.

DPS issues notice on keeping vehicles secure

The Department of Public Safety is making the University community aware of an increase in instances of vandalism and thefts of items from vehicles, as well as actual thefts of Kia and Hyundai vehicles. DPS is providing extra attention to the University’s indoor and outdoor parking areas on all campuses to help prevent these incidents from becoming a larger concern. Strategic planning discussion forum today at noon

All students, faculty, and staff are invited to join a discussion forum today, April 19, from noon to 1 p.m. to learn about the University’s Boundless Possibility 2030 strategic plan, ask questions, and provide feedback. This virtual session via Zoom is free and open to all but registration is required. Accessibility accommodations may be requested in the registration form or by contacting boundless@rochester.edu.

Celebrate the archival legacy of former Rochester Mayor William Johnson

Join the University of Rochester Libraries from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, for a reception and chat celebrating the addition of former Rochester Mayor William Johnson’s papers to the library’s archives. The libraries’ Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation will serve as the stewards of Johnson’s archive and is sponsoring the celebration in the Hawkins-Carlson Room, Rush Rhees Library. Refreshments will be served and reserved parking will be available in Library Lot.

Earth Week pollinator planting and riverside clean-up

Join fellow Green Reps, UR Bee Campus, and Horticulture and Grounds to celebrate Earth Week with a pollinator planting and riverside clean-up on Wednesday, April 24, from 1 to 3 p.m. The planting site is located on Hill Court Road on the River Campus, between Gale House and Kendrick House. Those interested in the riverside clean-up can meet at the planting site and will depart at 1 p.m. to pick up trash on the Genesee Riverway Trail along Wilson Boulevard. Pickers, gloves, and trash bags will be provided. Register in advance, wear closed-toe shoes, and bring water if needed.

Alumni Jeff Tyzik and Alexa Tarantino return to Eastman in May

The Eastman School of Music’s Eastman Wind Ensemble will feature conductor and composer Jeff Tyzik ’73E, ’77E (MM) and saxophonist Alexa Tarantino ’14E at 7:30 p.m. on May 1 in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre. On May 2, Eastman’s Chamber Jazz Ensemble welcomes Tarantino to the Kilbourn Hall stage at 7:30 p.m. Their visits largely center on the unveiling of new compositions penned by each of them and premiered over two concerts. Both performances are free and open to the public. Find details here.

Deaf and hard of hearing scientists conference

Register to attend Deaf Roc 2024, “Bridging the Gap: Empowering Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students in Hearing Research Environments.” The two-day conference takes place on August 29 at the School of Medicine and Dentistry and on August 30 at Rochester Institute of Technology.
