Kate Sheeran named Eastman School of Music dean

Kate Sheeran ’02E, an accomplished educator and academic administrator, professional musician, and executive director of the Kaufman Music Center in New York City, has been named the Joan and Martin Messinger Dean of the Eastman School of Music effective July 15.

Flags will be lowered for Neil Lachant

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Thursday, May 2, for Neil Lachant, a professor of medicine, who died on April 7. Lachant joined the University faculty in 2019.

Rochester Youth Year is still accepting applications on a rolling basis. Rochester Youth Year is an AmeriCorps program that engages graduating seniors to serve for one year with a local organization to strengthen their capacity and help alleviate poverty. Learn more and apply here.

Panel discussion: ‘Performing Othello in the 21st Century’

The story of Shakespeare’s Othello is undergirded by language and attitudes towards race and women that may seem out of tune with, and problematic for, contemporary sensibilities. Join the International Theatre Program for a discussion of these issues and more with a panel of academics and performers. Exploring women’s narratives through Barbie, Beyoncé, and Taylor Swift

Top off Earth Month with the Festival of Trees

Explore the connections between trees, human health, and equity and even participate in tree planting at the Festival of Trees event on Saturday, April 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Enrico Fermi School No. 17. Attendees will learn about “Tree Talk,” a collaborative project addressing issues of public health inequity in Rochester, led by April Luehmann, an associate professor of teaching and curriculum at the Warner School of Education and Human Development; the Institute for Human Health and the Environment, and the Enrico Fermi School No. 17. The event is free and open to the public.

March with the University in the Rochester Pride parade

Members of the University community and their families are invited to march in the Rochester Pride parade on Saturday, July 20, line up starts at 9:30 a.m. and the parade starts at 11 a.m. Find a full FAQ here including shuttle, parking, and shirt information. In 2019, a decision was made to keep the same shirts each year for environmental and budgetary purposes. If you marched and still have that tie-dye tank-style shirt, please wear that and do not request an additional one. Register here; if you need a shirt, register by April 30.

Eastman presents Jeff Beal ’85E

On Monday, May 6, at 7:30 p.m. in Hatch Recital Hall, Eastman School of Music presents Distinguished Visiting Artist Jeff Beal ’85E, an Emmy-winning composer, performing his meditative and rich solo piano work The New York Études, 10 new works for solo piano composed in the months after Beal relocated to New York City in 2021. Free public tours at the C.E.K. Mees Observatory

The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers free public tours at the C.E.K. Mees Observatory in Bristol Hills near Canandaigua from June through mid-August. Tours include a visit to the historic Gannett House, presentations on astronomy topics, a demonstration of the 24-inch Cassegrain reflector telescope, and observation of deep sky objects if the skies are clear. Reservations are required.
