Cancer is a disease of aging, but studies of older adults are lacking

Coauthored by Nikesha Gilmore, an assistant professor of surgery, a systemic review of the current body of research shows that investigators have inadequately addressed the intersection of aging, health disparities, and cancer outcomes among older adults.

NYSERDA award supports University’s energy efficiency projects

Energy Services and Sustainability has received funding from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s Commercial and Industrial Accelerated Efficiency program for energy efficiency projects including HVAC optimization, adding extra insulation via window skins to parts of Rush Rhees Library, and the electrification of the Brown Hound Downtown kitchen at the Memorial Art Gallery. Nominations due today for annual staff awards

The deadline to submit a nomination for the annual President’s Staff Awards is today, April 24. Find details here on recognizing a deserving colleague for their hard work and dedication.

  • The Witmer Award for Distinguished Service honors a select number of employees for careers characterized by outstanding and sustained contributions to the University.
  •  The Meliora Award recognizes a staff member or team of staff whose work and performance exemplify the University’s motto, Meliora.
  • The Staff Community Service Award honors a nonmanagement staff member whose volunteer service to the University or a nonprofit within the Greater Rochester community is outside of their usual assignment.
  • The Lamar Riley Murphy Leadership Award recognizes a staff member for innovative and proactive leadership.

Attend ‘Make It Happen Night’ at iZone

The Barbara J. Burger iZone will showcase the achievements of its “Make It Happen” prize recipients, a diverse group of undergraduate and graduate students, and alumni, who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and creativity in their projects. Grant recipients have undergone a rigorous selection process, and through iZone’s workshops, have honed their skills in design thinking, teaming, and effective pitching strategies, preparing them to bring their ideas to life. Attend “Make It Happen Night” on Thursday, April 25, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Campus transportation and parking survey

The Department of Transportation and Logistics invites faculty, staff, and students at all University locations to participate in a 10-minute survey to share feedback on their experiences with transportation and on-campus parking. Feedback is anonymous and will be instrumental in developing a transportation and parking blueprint for the next decade and beyond. Complete the survey through May 6, and you will also be entered into a drawing with a chance to win a $50, $100, or $150 Amazon gift card. MAG DeTOUR with Grant Holcomb

Who decides what art goes on view in an art museum? How do museums get new works of art? What is the role of a museum director? Spend an hour with Grant Holcomb, the former Mary W. and Donald R. Clark Director of the Memorial Art Gallery, and find out. For 29 years, Holcomb helped visitors connect with art, engage with the museum, and enlarge the museum’s collection. Learn about some of his favorite works, the secret stories of their acquisition, and facts about artists and events during his tenure.
