New art space embraces diversity and equity

The Department of Neurology has opened the doors to a new art gallery that will feature diverse artistic voices. Under the stewardship of Rochester artist Shawn Dunwoody, the Unity Gallery will leverage art to provoke thought, encourage dialogue, and celebrate the voices, minds, and faces that shape the community and medicine. Located in the department’s Joynt Corridor in Strong Memorial Hospital, the gallery is open to visitors weekdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The works can also be viewed virtually on the Unity Gallery website.

Warner School, RIT partner on accelerated graduate degree pathways for education and counseling students

The Warner School of Education and Human Development and Rochester Institute of Technology’s (RIT) College of Liberal Arts have established new admissions agreements, providing RIT undergraduate students with expedited pathways to launch their careers in teaching, higher education, or counseling. States find a downside to mandatory reporting laws meant to protect children

NPR, April 25

“There’s a long, depressing history based on the approach that our primary response to a struggling family is reporting,” says Mical Raz, the Charles E. and Dale L. Phelps Professor in Public Health and Policy, a professor of history, and a professor of clinical medicine. “There’s now a wealth of evidence that demonstrates that more reporting is not associated with better outcomes for children.”

Study hour with language tutors

Are you currently enrolled in language classes and need help with your studies? Join the Language Center on Saturday, April 27, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. for a study hour. Language tutors will be available to answer any questions you have and assist you in preparing for your finals. You’ll also have the opportunity to enter a raffle to win a prize.

Write-A-Thon

The Writing Fellows will be available for 12 straight hours from 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, through 2 a.m. on Monday, April 29, to assist undergraduates in the School of Arts & Sciences and the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences with papers—from any discipline and at any stage in the writing process—while you refuel with pizza and snacks. Drop by the Writing, Speaking, and Argument Program Office (G-122), Rush Rhees Library.

Registration extended for faculty retreat on civic engagement

Attend a faculty retreat on May 14 and 15 titled “How Can Civic Engagement Partnerships Help Revitalize Communities?” hosted by Hobart and William Smith Colleges, in partnership with the University of Rochester, Partners for Campus Community Engagement, and Cornell AgriTech. The registration deadline has been extended to Tuesday, April 30. Find more details including times and locations here. You can elect to attend one or both days.

Art of Science Competition reception

Celebrate the entries and meet the winners of this year’s Art of Science Competition at a reception starting at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, on the second floor of Carlson Library. Refreshments will be provided.

HearUR podcast launch party

Attend a launch party for the newest season of HearUR, a local history podcast produced by Rochester students. The current season focuses on the Genesee River. The event takes place Thursday, May 2, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Barbara J. Burger iZone, Rush Rhees Library.

Grand rounds webinar on transitional supportive housing resources

The next public health grand rounds webinar will share the history and development of the Medical Center’s transitional supportive housing resources and the importance of community-based partnerships to support the needs of patients. Commencement weekend baccalaureate mass

The Catholic Newman Community invites all graduates, friends, and families to a Commencement weekend baccalaureate mass on Thursday, May 16, at 5 p.m. at the Interfaith Chapel Sanctuary. Seniors will receive their honor cords and a special gift in appreciation from Newman.
