Medical Center heart researchers launch implantable cardioverter defibrillators study

With funding from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, heart researchers at the Medical Center will launch a study that may substantially decrease the use of implantable cardioverter defibrillators for patients with heart failure, because of advances in medical therapies.

Recent security breaches nationally underscore the importance of adopting robust multifactor authentication methods such as Duo Push or YubiKey. If you use Duo phone calls or SMS for multifactor authentication, University IT urges you to switch to the Duo Push authenticator app or a YubiKey for enhanced security. Push notifications provide a handy second verification option for daily use, while the YubiKey is a phishing-resistant backup. Learn how to set up Duo Push or YubiKey.

“What we don’t know is, once they get there, to what extent the plastics or the things attached to them cause inflammation or interfere with cellular processes in other ways,” says Katrina Korfmacher, a professor of environmental science and codirector of the new Lake Ontario Center for Microplastics and Human Health in a Changing Environment.

Learn about Rochester’s community partnerships

At the foundation of Boundless Possibility, the University’s 2030 strategic plan, there is a commitment to contributing to our region through economic, educational, social, and cultural partnerships. Shaun Nelms, the vice president for community partnerships, will talk about those partnerships at a University community forum on Friday, May 10, at noon via Zoom. Nelms will explain how his role connects to the strategic plan, and then, get into the importance of the University’s community partnerships and examples of where and how they have been successful. Additionally, there will be a brief overview of the plan and opportunities to ask questions. Register to attend.

Drop-in physics and math tutoring at the Learning Center

The Learning Center will offer drop-in tutoring hours in Dewey Hall, Room 1-154, during the reading period. Tutors for physics courses will be available from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 2; tutors for math courses will be available from 1 to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 3.

A student’s guide to self-compassion

A research study conducted in 2019 by Rebecca Martin showed a link between self-compassion and academic success among college students. To foster the complex skill of self-kindness, the Mindful University Project has created an online self-compassion guide. Explore the new guide with step-by-step explanations, evidence-based strategies, and on- and off-campus resources to support your practice of self-compassion.

Professional development course on fostering inclusion

Faculty and staff can register now for “Fostering a Culture of Belonging,” an online professional development course offered by the Association of College and University Educators beginning June 3. This nationally recognized microcredentialed, asynchronous eight-week course is for faculty seeking to strengthen inclusion in their courses and classroom environments, as well as noninstructional faculty and staff looking to foster belonging in their role. Eastman hosts finals of the 26th annual Lenya Competition

The final round of the 26th annual Lenya Competition is set to take place at Eastman School of Music on Saturday, May 4, at 1 p.m. in Kilbourn Hall. The Kurt Weill Foundation for Music welcomes 10 singing actors to compete for a top prize of $25,000. An evening performance of previous prizewinners takes place at 8 p.m. and features Analisa Leaming ’07E, among others. Find more details including how to stream these events live.

Lecture: ‘What Species Is Multispecies Justice?’

Cary Wolfe, the Bruce and Elizabeth Dunlevie Professor of English at Rice University, will open the Badgering Architecture symposium with a public keynote on multispecies justice. His talk will consider two of the most prominent political models of justice for other species—animal rights and rights of Nature—and trace their implications for the nexus of life, law, and ethics. Attend on Thursday, May 9, at 5 p.m. in the Humanities Center, Conference Room D, Rush Rhees Library.
