Did a magnetic field collapse trigger the emergence of animals?

University researchers led by John Tarduno, the William Kenan, Jr. Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and dean of research in the School of Arts & Sciences and the School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, studied Earth’s magnetic field during the transformative Ediacaran Period, which spanned from about 635 to 541 million years ago. The research raises questions about factors that may have fueled the emergence of complex, multicellular organisms, such as Ediacaran fauna, notable for their resemblance to early animals.

Graduation ‘glow up’ appointments available now

Need a haircut or stylist appointment before Commencement? ClipDart, owned by a University alumnus, aims to improve mental wellness through mobile barbers and stylists and is offering free appointments to graduating seniors on Monday, May 13. Sign up for an appointment through CCC.

Rainbow Graduation deadline extended to May 10

LGBTQ students graduating from any University school in the Class of 2024 are invited to attend a graduation ceremony hosted by the Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center on May 15 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the May Room, Wilson Commons. Enjoy cupcakes and hors d’oeuvres, and receive your rainbow cord for commencement and a certificate recognizing you as a rainbow graduate. John Blackshear, vice president for student life, is the keynote speaker. The deadline to register has been extended to May 10. Students can register here. LGBTQ faculty and staff are also invited to attend and can register here.

Preschool openings at the University’s on-site daycare

The Children’s School at the Medical Center currently has a few select openings for fall 2024 in their preschool rooms for children ages 3 and 4. Operated by KinderCare Learning Centers and located on Castleman Road, the daycare prioritizes University employees, providing them with priority placement and a 10 percent tuition discount. ‘Midnight Madness’ at the Friends of Strong Gift Shop by Cloverkey

The Friends of Strong Gift Shop by Cloverkey will be open for “Midnight Madness” on Thursday, May 9, from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. so overnight staff have the chance to shop. Browse Mother’s Day gifts and new Medical Center, Golisano Children’s Hospital, and Wilmot Cancer Center logo apparel. You can also browse a wide selection of books, puzzles, snacks, Stacy K floral arrangements, kids’ toys, and more.

Latina Health Day

Wilmot Cancer Institute’s Community Outreach and Engagement Office is partnering with IBERO American Action League to host a Latina Health Day on Friday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at International Plaza, 828 North Clinton Avenue. Stop by this free event to visit the “All of Us” research bus and the UR Medicine mobile mammography van while talking with health care and self-care vendors.

Rochester mechanical engineering students are partnering with the Houston Astros to build a baseball launcher that can reach speeds of more than 100 miles per hour to study the energy transfer between the bat and the ball. Learn more about this and other capstone projects showcased as part of last week’s Senior Design Day from the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences.
