Rochester students aim to ‘level the field’ for high schoolers applying to college
More families are turning to paid educational consultants to help navigate the college admissions process. Rochester undergraduate students (pictured, from left) Hana Zhang ’26, Adarsh Mavathaveedu ’24, and Keira Donnelly ’26 teamed up to found Project Level the Field to give underrepresented and first-generation students those services for free. Now, they’re branching out beyond Rochester.

“In general, the [magnetic] field is protective. If we had not had a field early in Earth’s history, water would have been stripped from the planet by the solar wind (a stream of energized particles flowing from the sun toward Earth),” says John Tarduno, the William Kenan, Jr. Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. “But in the Ediacaran Period, we had a fascinating period in the development of the deep Earth when processes creating the magnetic field … had become so inefficient after billions of years, that the field almost completely collapsed.”

Applications open for 2024 Del Monte Institute Pilot Program

Register for the Dr. David Satcher Community Health Improvement Awards
Register today for the 15th annual Dr. David Satcher Community Health Improvement Awards, happening Friday, May 31, at noon in Helen Wood Hall Auditorium. Keynote speaker Sacoby Wilson, director of community engagement, environmental justice, and health at the University of Maryland School of Public Health, will present “The Power of Community Engagement in the Fight for Environmental, Climate, and Energy Justice: Approaches, Solutions, and Impact.” The event also celebrates the work of the 2024 awardees, including Medical Center staff, faculty, and community partners. Lunch will be provided at Evarts Lounge immediately following the event. RSVPs for lunch must be received by Thursday, May 23.
