TODAY'S UPDATES

Why breast self-exams are no longer recommended and what to do instead

The American Cancer Society recommended against teaching self-breast exams 15 years ago. Anna Weiss, an associate professor of surgery and at Wilmot Cancer Institute and director of the Comprehensive Breast Care Center, explains why the guidelines changed and how to best screen for breast cancer now.

SECURITY TIP

Go the paperless route

Keep your identity safe by shredding documents containing personal information like bank statements, pay stubs, and canceled checks. Recycling or throwing away these treasure troves for identity thieves is not enough to protect valuable information. IT Security offers this tip: if you ditch those mail statements and go paperless with your accounts, you can protect your information, save paper, and save on potential hidden fees. Iron Mountain totes are located in locations around campus for any work-related documents you are looking to securely recycle.

FOR THE COMMUNITY

Semiconductor-focused hybrid I-Corps regional course

Rochester, in partnership with Syracuse University, is offering a semiconductor-focused hybrid I-Corps regional course June 17 through July 17. NSF I-Corps Regional Courses are for university-based STEM researchers and early-stage startup founders who are interested in exploring the market potential of their work and learning entrepreneurial skills. Participants learn to apply “customer discovery” methodology to evaluate the potential for translating their technology innovation from the lab into a successful product or service.
