TODAY'S UPDATES

Mobile stroke unit extends operating hours

The UR Medicine mobile stroke unit, which brings the expertise and technology necessary to diagnose and treat stroke directly to the patient, has extended services to the weekends. It is now operating from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., seven days a week. Operated in partnership with American Medical Response, it remains the only unit of its kind in upstate New York.

IN MEMORIAM

Flags will be lowered for Sheryle Charles

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Tuesday, June 4, for Sheryle Charles, a retired department secretary at the Eastman School of Music, who died on April 4. Charles joined the University staff in 1979.

ROCHESTER IN THE NEWS

Recognizing the physical and emotional toll that caring for a loved one with a chronic condition has on the caregiver

MSN News, May 21

“The typical caregiver likely has an ever-growing and changing to-do list and most of them probably do not add ‘take care of myself’ to that list. While caregiving can be a very rewarding experience, it can also take a huge physical and mental toll on even the strongest person,” says School of Nursing Dean Lisa Kitko, the Independence Foundation Chair in Nursing Education and a professor of nursing and geriatric medicine.

UNITED WAY

Heartfelt thanks for United Way campaign support

The University’s United Way campaign wrapped up on May 8 and campaign leadership offers its thanks to faculty and staff who donated to the annual workplace campaign, and to the many department coordinators who assisted with this year’s campaign. Local programs and agencies will benefit from this collective generosity. Online pledging will remain available until May 31 if you haven’t had a chance to give.

GO GREEN

Campus waste-reduction partnerships blossom

The Sustainability Office partners with various groups—including a new Zero Waste Committee and the annual Campus Race to Zero Waste competition—for waste-reduction initiatives to garner student support and enthusiasm on campus. Read more about these partnerships in this week’s Go Green blog post.

FOR FACULTY AND STAFF

Get ready for UR Stars

UR Stars, the new employee recognition program, enables the University to show our appreciation for the over 27,000 faculty and staff who live its values and make Rochester ever better, every day. To help you become familiar with UR Stars before its launch on June 10, training resources will be available on May 29 —including short how-to videos, FAQs, recognition best practices, and dates for live instructional sessions. An email with a link to these important resources and dates is forthcoming.

Nurse ethics liaison program now accepting applications

The purpose of the nine-month nurse ethics liaison program is to further knowledge of ethics at the Medical Center and develop the ability of a core group of nurses to be a supportive resource for peers who are struggling with ethical dilemmas and moral distress. Experienced staff nurses who meet the criteria noted in the application will be invited to participate in this program. Contact chris_donnelly@urmc.rochester.edu with questions.
