Leadership changes for Strong Memorial and Highland Hospitals and UR Medicine system

Effective July 1, current Strong Memorial Hospital Chief Operating Officer Kathy Parrinello will become president and CEO of Strong Memorial Hospital and will assume the president and CEO role at Highland Hospital before the end of 2024. Steve Goldstein, current president and CEO of Strong Memorial Hospital and Highland Hospital, will strengthen his current role to continue to direct strategic integration of the UR Medicine health system.

Parking permits expire June 30

Permit renewal season is here, and all current University parking permits will expire on Friday, June 30. If you did not enroll in auto renewal and would like to purchase a permit, go to My Parking Online, log in using your Active Directory username and password, and select “Get Permits.” Employees will see no increase in permit fees for the 2024–25 parking year. If you have questions or need assistance, contact Transportation and Logistics at (585) 275-4524 or via email.

Can ketones enhance cognitive function and protect brain networks?

Del Monte Institute for Neuroscience researchers led by Nathan Smith ’13M (PhD), an associate professor of neuroscience, have identified mechanisms in the brain’s hippocampal network that are rescued by ketones. These findings build on previous research showing that ketones can alleviate neurological and cognitive effects.


IN MEMORIAM

Flags will be lowered for Weiguo Peng

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Tuesday, June 18, for Weiguo Peng, a faculty member at the Center for Translational Neuromedicine, who died on May 17. Peng joined the University faculty in 2004.

Free safer sex supplies

Safe Sex Express, a program created by the Student Health Advisory Committee, is still operating for students staying on campus over the summer. Students with an on-campus mailbox can order supplies to be delivered directly to their mailbox, anonymously and for free.

Safe Space Lab

The Office of Human Resources Learning and Development Team presents the next Safe Space Lab on Tuesday, June 18, at noon. The one-hour, virtual session will include a personal presentation by Gwenn Gates, an engineer at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics. Her presentation entitled “Coming into My Identity as a Woman,” is about her journey into self-acceptance, which led her to recently complete a gender-affirming medical transition. The Safe Space Lab is available for all employees. Search for “Safe Space Lab” in MyPath to register.

Declutter your mind

Do you feel like you have “mental clutter”? This week’s UR Medicine EAP blog will help you define this and help declutter your mind. UR Medicine EAP is brought to you by Well U, helping eligible individuals to assess issues and provide short-term counseling and referrals.

Discover Warner School graduate programs and begin your education this fall

Attend a Warner School of Education and Human Development virtual information session from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, to learn about scholarship opportunities that can significantly reduce tuition expenses and get detailed insights into a variety of graduate programs, including applied behavior analysis, counseling, educational leadership, education policy, health professions education, higher education, human development, online teaching, program evaluation, and teaching. The Warner School welcomes applications on a rolling basis. Apply any time before July 15 for an entry term as early as fall 2024. Recreational badminton, kickball leagues

Register to play in a URMC Fitness Center badminton league starting in June and playing in College Town, or a kickball league at Genesee Valley Park starting June 26 and playing through the end of July. Complete information can be found here.
