Precautions and tips for dealing with the heat

A heat advisory is in effect until 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, for the Rochester region. For students staying on the River Campus this summer, there are air-conditioned locations in Wilson Commons, Douglass Commons, and Genesee Hall’s public area that can offer respite from the heat; building hours are available online. There are also air-conditioned spaces in River Campus Libraries and at the Goergen Athletic Center.

When the weather changes to hot temperatures over a short period, outdoor workers don’t have a chance to acclimate to the new, warmer conditions. Environmental Health and Safety suggests that, when possible, supervisors should take this into account when planning outdoor work. Additional tips include:

  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, and a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or more.
  • Drink extra fluids, especially water, to prevent dehydration.

Please note: @Rochester returns to your inbox Thursday after the Juneteenth holiday.

ROCHESTER IN THE NEWS

Older women are being significantly shortchanged by medical research

The Washington Post, June 16

Supriya Gupta Mohile, the Philip and Marilyn Wehrheim Professor in the Department of Medicine and the director of the Geriatric Oncology Research Group at the Wilmot Cancer Institute, wants better guidance about breast cancer screening for older women, broken down by health status. Currently, women 75 and older are lumped together even though some are remarkably healthy and others notably frail. “Right now, I think we’re underscreening fit older women and overscreening frail older women,” says Mohile.

HR Modernization: myURHR training registration

The University has reached another pivotal milestone for HR modernization with training launching this summer for the myURHR project. Faculty, staff, student workers, and other University members have been hearing about Workday and UKG, the two systems that power myURHR, and soon you will learn how to use them.

myURHR training highlights:

  • Beginning the week of June 24, MyPath notifications will be distributed to managers and coordinators, including department coordinators (currently known as PAFers).
  • MyPath notifications will include instructions on viewing training assignments and registering for instructor-led training (ILTs).
  • Beginning in June and July, managers and coordinators will start registering for instructor-led training (ILT) sessions assigned to them. ILTs will be held in person or via Zoom; attendees can ask questions live to experienced instructors. eLearnings will also be offered for ILT courses for individuals who want to take training at their own pace and time. Check your MyPath transcript for when eLearnings are available.
  • Beginning in August, training launches for timekeeping roles and the majority of faculty and staff.
  • Training will be available over the summer months through go-live to enable the completion of assignments as schedules permit and at your own pace.

Email the training team with any training-related questions and visit the myURHR training web page for course topics and to review Demo Days recordings to prepare yourself for myURHR, your modern HR workspace replacing HRMS on September 23.
