ROCHESTER IN THE NEWS

Is bird flu in cattle here to stay?

Los Angeles Times, June 27

David Topham, the Marie Curran Wilson and Joseph Chamberlain Wilson Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and the director of the Translational Immunology and Infectious Diseases Institute, says he understands the industry’s reluctance to permit government scientists onto farms “because we’re going to want to see everything, and we’re going to report everything that we see, and that might be bad for business. …But until we have all that information, I don’t think we will have control.”

FOR FACULTY AND STAFF

New instructor teaching orientation

An upcoming orientation from the Teaching Center provides new instructors with an easy and efficient way to prepare to teach.  Open to new faculty of any school or rank who teach undergraduates and are full-time employees, as well as all new full-time faculty in the School of Arts & Sciences or Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences. Parts one and two are on Zoom between July 19 and 23, and part three is in person on August 22.  Learn more and register here.

Taxable and non-taxable tuition reimbursement for employees

Graduate tuition assistance benefits that exceed $5,250 in a calendar year are taxable wages unless the course satisfies the requirements for a tax-deductible job-related course under IRS rules. If you believe that your proposed graduate-level course satisfies the requirements for a tax-deductible job-related course under IRS rules, complete the Graduate Tuition Reimbursement Tax Exemption Form for each course, when you complete the Employee Tuition Reimbursement application available online.

Organize a volunteer project in your community

For the past seven years, University volunteers have donated their time and efforts at food banks, animal shelters, schools, and their homes to bring the spirit of Meliora to local communities as part of Global Days of Service. Site leaders are needed for this year’s event. As a site leader, you will take the lead in identifying an organization in need, managing the details, and rallying others to join you throughout September. Ready to organize a project in your area? Sign up by July 12.
