Flags will be lowered for Joseph Hargrave

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Tuesday, July 16, for Joseph Hargrave, a student in the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences and a member of the Class of 2026, who died on June 20.

New instructor teaching orientation

An upcoming orientation from the Teaching Center provides new instructors with an easy and efficient way to prepare to teach. Open to new faculty of any school or rank who teach undergraduates and are full-time employees, as well as all new full-time faculty in the School of Arts & Sciences or Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences. Parts one and two are on Zoom between July 19 and 23, and part three is in person on August 22. Learn more and register here.

Pride Celebration Day at MAG

Join the Memorial Art Gallery for LGBTQIA+ Pride Celebration Day, an annual celebration of acceptance, community, diversity, learning, and love on Thursday, July 11, from 5 to 9 p.m. Visitors will enjoy free museum admission, drag story time with Vanessa LeRoux, music from Flower City Pride Band, food trucks including Chef’s Catering and Effortlessly Healthy, artmaking with the museum’s Creative Workshop, bubbles, lawn games, and more all-ages fun. Registration is required.

Technology Development Fund call for pre-proposal applications

The Technology Development Fund is now accepting pre-proposal applications for its 22nd round of funding. The fund supports University researchers who wish to further the process of translating their research into commercial opportunities. Awards can range from $40,000 to $100,000 to support projects of approximately one year. Faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, students, and employees of the University who have submitted (or will submit by July 31) an invention disclosure to the UR Ventures Office are encouraged to apply. The deadline for submitting pre-proposal applications for consideration of funding this cycle is July 31.

Several pre-proposals will be selected for full application submission and funding consideration. Invitations for full proposals are anticipated to be sent the week of August 19.

Drop-in summer classes at the Fitness Center

Until Labor Day, the Fitness Center in College Town is offering classes for $3 for students and $4 for non-student University affiliates. Offerings include Zumba and toning. Find class schedules and information here.

Friends of Strong hosts high school volunteer program

Summertime brings sun, fun, and a thriving High School Volunteer Program to Friends of Strong. Learn about the history of the program, how to get started, and the impact it has on the community and in the lives of volunteers.
