January 16, 2017,

Dear members of the Hajim School community:

We take great pride in showcasing the accomplishments of our faculty, students, staff, and alumni in Hajim Highlights. But some of these accomplishments rely, at least in part, on the great work done by people outside our school, who support us in a variety of ways. Courtney Mogavero, a university program specialist at Google, is one such person. Courtney has worked closely with Joe Testani and his staff at the Gwen M. Greene Career & Internship Center to provide internships and job opportunities for our students and to enhance their career readiness. She has sponsored or helped plan student- and Google-led hackathons, participated in our first Engineering Career Expo, coordinated visits to Google’s offices, set up panels on how to be a good intern — to mention just a few of her activities on behalf of our students. Her efforts resulted in 10 Google internships for students last summer. Our congratulations to Courtney on the well-earned Lou Takacs Award she will receive next month from the Cooperative and Experiential Education Division of the American Society for Engineering Education. The award is presented to a company representative who has gone above and beyond to promote cooperative and experiential education. Thank you, Courtney, for all you do on behalf of our students.

Students, faculty, staff — please join us in the Hajim School’s Art of Science Competition, by submitting digital images, illustrations, posters, and videos that incorporate the imaginative use of science, art, and technology. Submissions will be accepted through March 31. Cash prizes of $500, $300, and $200 will be awarded, based on visual impact, effective communication, and freshness and originality. Click here for more details; contact Sandra Turner with questions and to submit an entry.

Our student chapter of the Society for Biomaterials is helping to organize the first annual Mid-Atlantic Biomaterials Day on Feb. 24 at the City College of New York. Danielle Benoit, associate professor of biomedical engineering, will discuss drug/gene delivery as one of four plenary speakers. Click here to submit abstracts for rapid fire talks and posters through January 27.

Hajim School alumni, friends, and Industrial Associates members please take note: Xi-Cheng Zhang, director of The Institute of Optics, will speak at a reception from 7 to 9:30 p.m., January 29, at the Marriott Marquis in San Francisco during the SPIE Photonics West conference. Please register by January 23 at ase.events@rochester.edu or by calling (585) 275-6166.

Have great week!

Your dean,
Wendi Heinzelman
