Dear members of the Hajim School community,

The current issue of Dialogue, the Wilmot Cancer Institute magazine, features an article about the collaboration of Danielle Benoit, associate professor of biomedical engineering; Rudi Fasan, associate professor of chemistry; and Ben Frisch, research assistant professor of hematology/oncology, to develop a nanoparticle-based delivery system for the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia. This is one of many examples of exciting research that is facilitated by the proximity of the Medical Center to the River Campus.

Xi-Cheng Zhang, director of The Institute of Optics and the M. Parker Givens Professor of Optics is this year’s Selby Fellow, funded by the Selby Scientific Foundation to bring distinguished overseas scientists to visit Australia for public lecture and seminar tours and to visit scientific centers. Xi-Cheng, along with Alexander Shkurinov of Lomonosov Moscow State University, and Yan Zhang of the Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Imaging Technology, nicely summarizes the future opportunities of extreme terahertz science in a recent article in Nature Photonics. Here’s another alumnus making a difference: Hany Farid ’88, who majored in applied math and computer science, is the chair of Dartmouth’s computer science department and founder and CTO of Fourandsix Technologies. He’s playing a lead role in creating programs to identify and root out child pornography and extremist political content, two of the worst online scourges. Today is the deadline for students to register for the Google Games, featuring head-to-head team competitions in a series of challenges including puzzles, word association, and coding, to be held from 6 to 9 p.m., Feb. 1, in the May Room of Wilson Commons. Sounds like fun! Register here.
