June 1, 2021

Dear members of the Hajim School community,

I hope everyone enjoyed a safe and restful Memorial Day Weekend!

Before we put Commencement behind us, I would like to share video and YouTube links to the various diploma ceremonies our faculty, staff, and students participated in–for the benefit of those who could not join us in person. This includes the three diploma ceremonies we held for our graduating seniors on the Eastman Quad.

You can also find a summary and photo collage at our Hajim School Commencement Page. Take a look to learn more about the photos above!

Godspeed to the Class of 2021!

RESEARCH NEWS

University Research Awards provide “seed” grants for promising, high-risk projects that reflect some of the best of the cutting-edge research occurring at our University. Often this is enabled by the collaborations that form between clinicians, scientists, and engineers, thanks to the close proximity of our world-class Medical Center to the River Campus. This year’s awards include these exciting projects involving Hajim School faculty members:

  • Niaz Abdolrahim, assistant professor of mechanical engineering; Chenliang Xu, assistant professor of computer science.
Capturing nanoscale lattice variations by applying AI-powered computer vision techniques on synthetic x-ray diffraction data.
  • Diane Dalecki, Kevin J. Parker Distinguished Professor and chair of biomedical engineering and director of the Rochester Center for Biomedical Ultrasound; Denise Hocking, professor of pharmacology and physiology and biomedical engineering.
Using Mechanical Stimuli to Activate the Extracellular Matrix for Wound Healing.
  • Ehsan Hoque, associate professor of computer science; Gourab Ghoshal, associate professor of physics.
Understanding Creative Performances in Social Networks.
  • Michael Huang and Qiang Lin, professors of electrical and computer engineering.
    Photonic Reservoir for Machine Learning.
  • Nick Vamivakas, AS&E dean of graduate education and postdoctoral affairs and professor of quantum optics and quantum physics; Pengfei Huo, assistant professor of chemistry; Todd Krauss, professor and department chair of chemistry.
Investigating Polariton Mediated Electron Transfer Reactions.
  • Jiebo Luo, professor of computer science; Timothy Dye, professor of obstetrics and gynecology and public health sciences.
Addressing COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy among Populations with Health Disparities by Integrating Survey and Social Media Data.
  • Danielle Benoit, professor of biomedical engineering and director of the Materials Science Program; Anne Meyer, associate professor of biology; Jin Xiao, associate professor of dentistry.
Biofilm-on-a-chip: Development of a microphysiological platform to revolutionize treatment paradigms (to achieve durable treatments for dental caries).
  • Andrea Pickel, assistant professor of mechanical engineering; Nick Vamivakas, dean of graduate education and postdoctoral affairs and professor of quantum optics and quantum physics.
Probing Nanoscale Thermal Transport with Optically Levitated Nanodiamonds.

THANKS TO OUR SUPPORTERS

On behalf of the Hajim School, our University, and our Advancement team, I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the alumni, parents, and friends of our school who made gifts to support our mission, volunteered to mentor our students, and opened doorways of opportunity with internship and job opportunities. Your unwavering support provided encouragement and strength to our students, faculty, and staff during some of the most difficult days any of us have had to endure.  You also enabled us to maintain high standards of creativity, critical thinking, ethics, and leadership throughout these unpredictable times.  We are very grateful. Thank you again for supporting our work in the spirit of Meliora! For those who are interested in making a gift please visit our Hajim giving page or email Tyrone.Jimmison@Rochester.edu.

Have a great week,

Your dean,
Wendi Heinzelman
