Dear members of the Hajim School community,

Moving-in has begun! There’s been a flurry of activity in recent days as the Departments of Computer Science and Chemical Engineering have begun occupying their new space in Wegmans Hall. Computer science offices and labs occupy the second and third floors. ChemE’s offices are on the fourth floor, where the wall-size window in the Gouq-Jen Su conference room offers an absolutely stunning view of the Genesee River. An enclosed walkway connects to Hopeman, where ChemE’s labs will eventually be on the third and fourth floors after being relocated from Gavett.

Later this summer, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering —now split between Hopeman and the Computer Studies Building — will be united in CSB. The department, along with the Audio and Music Engineering program, will occupy not only the fourth and fifth floors, but also the sixth and seventh floors just vacated by computer science. The Center for Emerging and Innovative Sciences, now in Taylor Hall, will also move to CSB.

Congratulations to:

  • Ching Tang, professor emeritus of chemical engineering, who has been recognized by IEEE with the Jun-ichi Nishizawa Medal in recognition of his “groundbreaking discoveries” in OLED technology. Read more about Ching’s remarkable achievements here.
  • Sayaka Abe ’17 of chemical engineering, who was selected as a 2nd Team At-Large Academic All-American for her outstanding performance in field hockey and in the classroom. (Read more here.) Sayaka, a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi, was honored three times by the University for her combination of academic and athletic excellence, with the Phi Beta Kappa Iota Book Award as a sophomore, as a Provost’s Circle Scholar as a junior, and as a Garnish Scholar as a senior. Well done, Sayaka!

Thanks to the G.W. Lisk Company of Clifton Springs for their recent commitment to provide funding to our Mechanical Engineering Department for senior design projects.  This gift will have a tremendous impact on our senior Mech E design teams, providing much needed financial support to expand our program and meet the increased needs of our students.

Have a great week!

Your dean,
Wendi Heinzelman
