Jordynn Foster, a biomedical engineering student from North Carolina A&T who conducted research at Rochester this summer with Professor Nick Vamivakas from the Institute of Optics through the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, presented her research at the Kearns Summer Research Symposium. She presented her work on super resolution of optical imaging during a paenl discussion moderated by optics PhD student Demetrious Dowdell, right.

Dear Members of the Hajim School Community,

On Friday, we celebrated the accomplishments of more than 60 research scholars who participated in a ten-week summer research program at the University. The 2023 Summer Research Symposium hosted by the David T. Kearns Center was an opportunity for students to showcase their research and prepare for professional conference presentations.

The research students come from Rochester as well as other institutions across the country and are in programs that include the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program and Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Data Science, Chemistry, Optics, and Physics and Astronomy.

Among the students who participated in the symposium this year included the Hajim School’s Emily DeVeyra ’26. She participated in an REU hosted by the Institute of Optics and worked with Associate Professor of Optics William Renninger on a project to optimize coupling efficiency for soliton generation.

The students produced some terrific work this summer and are on the path to becoming great researchers. Thank you to all the Hajim School faculty who mentored them throughout the summer. Check out the University’s Instagram account for images from the event.

BOUNDLESS POSSIBILITY

The University is entering the implementation phase of its 2030 Strategic Plan, and members of the University community are invited to join an upcoming discussion forum to learn more about the plan’s goals and objectives, ask questions, and provide feedback. Two Zoom sessions remain this summer on Thursday, August 3 and Wednesday, August 9.

Each session will include PowerPoint slides and spoken remarks. Registration is not required but if you have any accessibility requirements, please contact the presentation team.

The Hajim School plays an integral part in the plan’s goals and objectives so I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to engage in the strategic planning process.

SMART WOMAN AWARD

One of our faculty members was recently honored by the Federation of Health Innovation Industry in Spain. Susana Marcos, who serves as the David R. Williams Director of the Center for Visual Science and the Nicholas George Professor of Optics and of Ophthalmology, was recognized with an award for best investigator at the Smart Woman Forum & Awards in Madrid on July 19.

This is just the second year of the awards ceremony, and I am so pleased to see Susana once again recognized for her outstanding work. Please join me in congratulating Susana.

IRONMAN

Ehsan Hoque rides a bicycle next to a lake

Congratulations to Associate Professor Ehsan Hoque from the Department of Computer Science who recently completed a remarkable personal achievement last weekend. Ehsan conquered the IRONMAN Lake Placid event that took place on July 21.

IRONMAN Lake Placid is a grueling race that consists of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle, and a 26.2 mile run. One of nearly 2,000 competitors from around the world, Ehsan finished with a commendable time of 16 hours, 28 minutes, and 41 seconds.

Training for an event of this level takes years of dedication and commitment. To be able to balance this with a prolific academic career is incredible. We’re very proud of you, Ehsan!

Have a great week!

Your dean,
Wendi Heinzelman
