Dear members of the Hajim School community:

Congratulations to two of our student athletes who have won major awards while helping the women’s varsity field hockey team achieve an 18-5 record and reach the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament. Sayaka Abe, a senior in chemical engineering, was named Liberty League Defensive Player of the Year, and Maya Haigis, a freshman in data science, was rookie of the year. This is another example of the opportunities our students have to pursue passions and interests in addition to engineering. Read more about Sayaka’s and Maya’s achievements here.

Congratulations as well to Tony Green, our former director of finance and administration, now deputy in the provost’s office, who is among this year’s recipients of the Rochester Business Journal’s Forty Under 40 award. The award recognizes those who have achieved professional success and have also made significant civic contributions to our community. Well done, Tony!

It’s always great to hear about Hajim alums doing good work after leaving here. Benjamin Freedman ’11 of biomedical engineering, now a PhD student at the University of Pennsylvania, recently visited the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez as part of a Howard Hughes Medical Institute program that provides outreach to research institutions that predominantly serve groups underrepresented in STEM fields. Benjamin shared with students the work he’s doing at the University of Pennsylvania on ankle and knee tendon injuries. You can read more about his trip here.

A reminder to our students:  Please take a moment to complete the University of Rochester’s 2016 Summer Experience Survey at  http://bit.ly/2016SummerSurvey,  This will help us better serve students seeking internships, part-time jobs, hands-on research, study abroad, and other summer opportunities.  Your voice and your experiences can help your fellow classmates make their summers ever better. As a thank you, you will be entered into a drawing to win 1 of 40 $25 Starbucks gift cards.  There will be a drawing for the winners after the survey closes on December 1, 2016.

Have a great week, and a great Thanksgiving!

Your dean,
Wendi Heinzelman
