New Course Overload Policy

The College will be phasing in a new course overload policy beginning in spring 2022 for all students (first-year and transfer) who matriculated beginning in fall 2021. The new policy will be in effect for all other College undergraduate students beginning in fall 2022.

The credit-hour cap will limit students to 24 credits total per semester, with GPA requirements for any student requesting to register for 20 or more credits. The new policy retains some previous conditions on overloading, including the existing enrollment cap for first-semester students and restrictions on overloading for students carrying an incomplete grade. There are also some special conditions for students in the Eastman-College dual degree program.

Students will be expected to provide a short rationale and justification for overloading and will be asked to identify those courses counted as overloads, the academic need for overloading, and their plan for handling the increased workload—information that will be evaluated during the overload petition review process. The College plans to introduce a new electronic form for this purpose shortly.

Academic assistance is also available to students through the College Center for Academic Services, which can support students in their degree planning. An FAQ will be developed to answer common questions relating to the new policy.
