Debate Pair Finish As Finalists At HWS Tourney

October 5, 2016

This past weekend the URDU brought a bus full of debaters – many of them brand new to debate – and everyone benefited from what was a re-vamped Hobart and William Smith Colleges tournament.

With a prestigious adjudication team and some of the best judges and debaters around the Northeast, our debaters couldn’t have been in better debates! All that new team energy was put to use on Sunday when the team of Ben Frazer and Graeme McGuire debated through quarters, and then semis, and eventually into finals. URDU debaters camped out in those rounds, taking notes and supporting their teammates.

2016 HWS Team Dinner

The HWS tournament debaters from UR stopped for dinner on Saturday night after rounds were finished.

Frazer and McGuire ended the tournament on the motion, “This House Regrets the new politics of the campus left,” in a fantastic debate against Harvard, Bates, and Hart House. (Watch a video of the round here: https://youtu.be/2IYzfQCGnGw). In a close finish Harvard edged out a win and Rochester FM finished as finalists. We congratulate them on a well debated tournament!

We prepare for West Point this weekend and, for those staying behind, our alumni Open House for Meliora weekend in the debate office this Friday, from 3:30-5:30.  If you’re in town this weekend come on by and share your favorite debate stories!
