As the fall semester quickly approaches, many of us will be returning to campus. Here are a few tips that can help you make a smooth transition back to the office.

Prepare for work the night before

Unfortunately, the days of waking up and walking over to your laptop in your pajama pants might be over, but it doesn’t mean mornings need to be hectic. Try preparing for your workday the night before. Taking a few minutes to meal prep or picking out your work outfit may make for a less stressed morning.

Re-establish your sleep schedule

Without a commute or physical distance between you and the office, your sleep schedule might be a little abnormal at the moment with sleeping in or staying up late. Remember to create a bedtime routine that will provide seven to nine hours of sleep but still allow plenty of time in the morning to prepare for the day.

Stay up to date on safety protocols

As COVID-19 rules change, many organizations are creating protocols and safety guidelines. It can be helpful to go over any safety plans before returning to the office. Visiting the University of Rochester’s COVID-19 Resource Center can aid in defining guiding principles, outlining the last University messages, and providing useful FAQs.

A restart mindset

Returning to the office might seem odd, but you can use this time as a “restart” in your current position. Use this transition period to implement new goals for yourself or start projects you have been putting off because they were challenging or impossible to do remotely.

Remember, if you’re anxious, it is okay

The pandemic has been traumatic for everyone, and if you are feeling anxious or worried about returning to the office, you’re not the only one. Remember to ask for help and don’t ignore self-care. Exercising, eating well, and making time for activities that allow you to unwind can help ease anxiety and help you prepare for life back in the office.

Bonus: have fun!

Going back to the office shouldn’t be something we dread. You spend a significant amount of time in the workplace so strive to return to the office with a positive attitude. Try blaring your favorite songs on your drive or ordering your favorite caffeinated beverage on your way to work. Heading back to the workplace with a positive mindset can help make the experience a little easier.
