Katherine Shaw is an Analyst and Programmer lead on the eRecord team in ISD (Information Systems Division) at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Katie is an application coordinator for Bugsy/Infection Control and an analyst for the Inpatient Orders team. She’s been with the University for 10 years, and she previously held a position as a Laboratory Technician in Pediatric Nephrology where she worked on pediatric kidney disease studies for 4 years.

Katie’s excitement about her current role is infectious. When asked to describe her team, she said, “ISD is so much more than just the Help Desk! While most employees only interact with our awesome front-line staff, the department is responsible for servers, data centers, databases, Windows technology, hardware, eRecord training, eRecord software support, and much more.”

Katie works closely with clinical informaticists, clinicians, and other subject matter experts to design and implement changes to the URMC’s large eRecord system. Especially fulfilling is the opportunity to create or tweak a workflow in a way that makes users’ lives easier or improves patient safety and outcomes.

When she was younger, Katie dreamed of growing up to be a scientist: “I have always loved learning about plants and animals, and carried that through to earning my degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.” When she’s not at work, you can catch Katie reading fiction, enjoying the outdoors, and spending time with friends and family.
