Student Employment in Foreign Countries

For several reasons, departments are discouraged from employing University students in locations outside of the U.S. As provided in the Out-of-State Employment Policy, current student employees that are employed through Student Employment, as Time-as-Reported (TAR) employees, or graduate students with “add-on appointments” are generally not permitted to work outside New York State or the U.S. and remain on University payroll. Note that graduate students who are paid a stipend for work associated with their educational pursuits and who are located outside of New York State or the U.S. are excluded from this general prohibition.

All University affiliated or sponsored experiences abroad – including research – for graduate or undergraduate students must be approved by the Center for Education Abroad. In rare cases where the University Student Employment Office receives a request for student employment where one or more students would act as an employee for the University as part of the experience abroad, the Center for Education Abroad must also approve the arrangement.

Also, the University is particularly sensitive to the health, safety, and security of students when travelling internationally, and requires students to register their university-sponsored or supported travel in the Education Abroad Portal.Depending on the circumstances, if the student is traveling to a location with a travel warning, travel may require additional approval from the University’s Committee on International Travel, Health, & Safety. Also, if a student’s U.S. visa has or is about to expire, the student may have difficulty re-entering the U.S. at the conclusion of the employment-related travel.
