Creating tomorrow’s workforce today
UR Career Pathways is a new career development program supporting staff growth and development, helping employees build long-term careers at the University of Rochester.
The program will roll out in phases, with the first phase focusing on opportunities for those who are interested in one of the many positions which are currently in high demand.
Supporting employees through providing career pathways means cultivating growth, maximizing potential, and deepening job satisfaction.
These positions currently include many in the healthcare field, such as licensed practical nurse (LPN) and pharmacy technician—with more to come as the program expands. Qualified participants will receive education, guidance, and support in exploring and moving into these high-demand positions.
Building a skilled, inclusive workforce
UR Career Pathways seeks to foster an inclusive work environment by expanding access to University of Rochester job opportunities for people from diverse communities. We do this by providing tools and support toward ongoing development and engagement within the University community: creating talent pipelines from the Outside-In and from the Inside-Up.
- Outside-In: Recruiting workforce talent by removing barriers to employment. Securing high-demand positions associated with career pathways, leading to successful careers.
- Inside-Up: Retaining workforce talent by connecting employees to high-demand positions and supporting them with the skills and resources to advance along a desired career pathway.

Hear from our leaders
Barb Gunn, Associate Director
When I first heard about UR Career Pathways, I instantly thought it was a wonderful way to develop and retain our valuable employees. This program encourages staff to use the skills they have, build on them, and prepare for potential growth in other areas of the University. We need to do all we can to encourage employees to stay with our wonderful organization. As much as we don’t like to see people go, we do like to see them grow.
Manager frequently asked questions
What is UR Career Pathways?
UR Career Pathways is a career navigation program that supports employees in exploring career possibilities toward achieving career goals. We are committed to providing participants with the education, resources, and support needed to power their personal career journeys. We want to help our dedicated employees realize their career goals.
What is a “career pathway”?
A career pathway, also sometimes known as a career path, is composed of steps to take in your professional life for progressing into different or more advanced roles at work. It’s a series of jobs and experiences that help employees reach their ultimate career objectives and future goals. Awareness and understanding of the various career pathways at the University of Rochester are important for managers. It allows them support employees in planning their future, enhancing their skills in their current jobs, or identifying paths for career growth and promotions. At this time, the UR Career Pathways program is focused on our high-demand positions. View an example of a career pathway.
What careers are available to employees on my team?
Currently we are focusing on identifying employees for training and development for a group of identified high-demand positions at the University of Rochester. Please visit our UR Career Pathways page to learn more about these options and the UR Career Pathways program.
Who is eligible for UR Career Pathways?
A University of Rochester employee who has been in their current position for at least one year, has received a favorable rating on the last performance review, is in good standing (no disciplinary action within the last six months), and is supported by their supervisor is eligible. Employees also must be continuously employed by the University for at least the last 12 months in a full-time or part-time position prior to submission of the application.
Does an employee need to work at the University of Rochester full-time to participate?
Yes, full-time staff and faculty are eligible for the program. Time-as-Reported (TAR) status employees are not eligible to participate.
Is a supervisor recommendation required?
As part of the eligibility requirements, a supervisor must provide a recommendation for an employee to participate in the program, as the required training may take place during the workday.
While working a full-time position, how is an employee able to train?
If accepted into the program, an employee is allowed up to eight hours of paid release time per week (based on FTE status) to focus on studies and training. Because some of the training may take place during regular work shifts, manager support is required.
We recognize the absence of an employee creates challenges for managers. If you have an employee you’d like to support as part of our program, please reach out to the UR Career Pathways team to discuss your team’s needs, and ways to make it possible.
How long are employees part of the program?
The time each employee spends training for a new career would depend on what position they are training for.
An employee interested in applying mentioned there is a special tuition benefit. How does that work?
Unlike many tuition benefit programs, UR Career Pathways doesn’t require tuition to be paid upfront by the program participant, with reimbursement later. The UR Career Pathways program provides advanced tuition payments directly to the educational provider so that employees can proceed on their personal journey without cost or delay. It’s an important benefit that addresses a very real barrier many employees face.
What are the first steps for employees to apply to the UR Career Pathways program?
You can support your employee by first meeting with them to discuss their career goals and the possibility of participating in this program. A manager’s guide is available to help with your conversation. The UR Career Pathways team also is available to answer your questions, and those your employee may have.
If this program ends up not being a good fit for my employee, are there other career development options available?
If the UR Career Pathways program is not a good fit at this time, please consider directing your employee to the MyCareer Plan Self-Guided career development resource and the many staff development resources listed on the Learning & Development page, and educational offerings in MyPath.
