UR Career Pathways FAQs

What is the Career Navigation Program?

Career Navigation is a support service to foster internal employee movement through the UR Career Pathways to achieve career goals. This program was created as part of the University of Rochester Equity and Anti-Racism Action Plan. We are committed to providing you with the education, resources and support you need to power your personal career journey. We want to help you realize your goals and encourage new ones.

Yes.

Do I need to work at UR after completing the program?

Developing a rich, rewarding and long-term career with the University is the aim and goal of our program. It is an expectation that you will continue to contribute to our organization in the future, so that we can continue to support and enhance each other, and in turn our Rochester community.

What careers are eligible?

Currently, we are focusing on training employees like you for a group of high-demand positions at the University of Rochester. Please consider the options that interest you and your career goals, and then consult with your supervisor or reach out to the UR Career Pathways team for information.

Do I need supervisor approval?

Supervisor approval is needed to participate. Much of the Career Navigation Program takes place during the work day. Additionally, these career development opportunities are available to those who have shown success in their current roles: it is available to employees who are in good standing (no disciplinary action within the last 6 months).

With a full-time position, when would I be able to train?

If accepted into the program, you would be allowed eight hours of paid release time per week to focus on your studies. Because much of the training would take place during regular work shifts, your supervisor would commit to covering your responsibilities while you are away.

How long would I be in the program?

The time you would spend training for a new career would depend on what position you are seeking. Outpatient access specialist positions would mean between x and x months of training, whereas becoming a registered nurse may require x.

Do I need to pay tuition upfront, out-of-pocket for training?

Unlike many career development initiatives, UR Career Pathways doesn’t require tuition from the employee. It provides advanced tuition payments so that you can proceed on your personal journey without cost and without delay.

How do I pursue Career Navigation?

To pursue Career Navigation, please touch base with your immediate supervisor to discuss your career goals and the possibility of participating in this program.
