Welcome Guide: Training

Live the Six begins with being open to taking an educational journey with us. We are all in different places, stages, and mindsets. Some of us are solo learners and some of us are learning in groups. Think of Live the Six as our container for challenging conversations as we travel together. It is important to first learn more about having conversations with each other and building community around our common goal.

Solo learning: Training guide

Step one: Self-reflect

Take a moment to reflect on the work you have done in the past and what you are hoping to accomplish.

  • Are there areas you have had trouble with in the past?
    • For example: I want to be able to express myself more confidently and assertively when I witness actions that contradict our values.
  • Are there skills you would like to gain with this work?
    • For example: I want to communicate more effectively when I face tough situations or topics with my colleagues.
Step two: Watch our legacy video

Watch the video on our homepage and reflect on the following prompts:

  • Rochester has a long and storied history fighting racism. What parts of the video stand out to you the most?
  • The video invites us to take pride in our past, but also to acknowledge the legacy of injustice that still lingers today. How can we be accountable for the impacts of racism, both past and present, to create a more just future for everyone?
  • This video asks us to face our moment now and encourages us to stand against hate, oppression, and racism. What are some steps we can take to achieve this goal now?
Step three: Review helpful terminology

No one is expected to be an expert, again, we are all in different places, stages, and mindsets.

  • Review our helpful glossary of commonly used terms.
  • Take note of any terms that are new for you.
  • Are there definitions here that differ from what you have seen before?
Step four: Download and review our PowerPoint

Get a better understanding of what we hope to accomplish with Live the Six by reading through our informational PowerPoint presentation.

Step five: Explore our FAQs

What does Live the Six mean? What does choose L.O.V.E. mean? Our FAQs provide insight into the background and context for how Live the Six began and what inspired it.

Step six: Read through the Meliora and ICARE values

Live the Six is based on the foundations of our institution, the Meliora values. If you are affiliated with the Medical Center, you will also be familiar with our ICARE values. These are expectations of how we treat each other and are integral to Live the Six.

Step seven: Write a personal mission statement

Please take a moment to craft a personal Live the Six mission statement. Why will you Live the Six? How will you do this? Email us at ioei@rochester.edu to share your statement with us. Feel free to send us a document, a video or a photo that explains it best.

Step eight: Request a speaker

The Office of Equity & Inclusion welcomes opportunities to speak in-person or virtually about Live the Six and other initiatives. Send us a request, or contact us if you have any questions.

Group learning: Training guide

Step one: Self-reflect

Before you can address long-standing systems of oppression, you need to create or reinforce a community for this work. Healthy communication is a key foundational step for community building. Start by reviewing this microlearning module, which will help you reflect on your team’s communication norms, review how to create healthy communication boundaries, and introduce a few concepts central to anti-racism work.

Step two: Create a shared agreement

Now that you have identified and strengthened your community, let’s create shared agreements. Download the Shared Agreement worksheet to create shared agreements for your team’s communication. Remember that shared agreements are works in progress—you can always add, subtract, and edit over time!

Now that you have established your community and created shared agreements, you are ready to start engaging with Live the Six content together.

Step three: Watch our legacy video

As a team, watch the video on our homepage and together consider the following reflection prompts:

  • Rochester has a long and storied history fighting racism. What parts of the video stand out to you the most?
  • The video invites us to take pride in our past, but also to acknowledge the legacy of injustice that still lingers today. How can we be accountable for the impacts of racism, both past and present, to create a more just future for everyone?
  • This video asks us to face our moment now and encourages us to stand against hate, oppression, and racism. What are some steps we can take to achieve this goal now?
Step four: Review helpful terminology

No one is expected to be an expert, again, we are all in different places, stages, and mindsets. Your team does not have to review these all at once. Consider taking on one or a few at a time over a period of days or weeks.

  • Review and discuss the glossary of commonly used terms.
  • Take note of any terms that are new for any member of the team.
  • Are there definitions here that differ from what you have seen before?
Step five: Download and review our PowerPoint
