Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa invites for induction the most outstanding students at America’s leading colleges and universities. Membership is by invitation only, and students are selected by faculty members who are members of the society.

“We’re all very excited to elect a new group of undergraduates to the University’s chapter of Phi Beta Kappa,” says Gerald Gamm, professor of political science and history and vice president of the University’s Iota Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. “The students we are inducting next month have extraordinary records of achievement, both in and beyond the classroom.”

The University’s Phi Beta Kappa chapter was founded in 1887. Members are chosen based on exceptional academic performance and a letter of recommendation from a faculty or staff member. New members are elected each spring by members of the Iota chapter at the recommendation of the nominating committee.

The chapter tends to elect approximately 10 percent of each graduating class, and restricts membership to those who have spent at least three full years in residence. Particularly strong candidates are elected as juniors, the rest as seniors.

A formal induction ceremony will take play on Saturday, May 20, at noon in Hubbell Auditorium, Hutchison Hall. This year’s keynote speaker will be Beth Olivares, dean for diversity initiatives and director of the David T. Kearns Center for Leadership and Diversity.
