#1: Get a seat for student a cappella show

The University’s oldest all male a cappella group, the YellowJackets, will present its fall show titled “Black Mirror” on Friday, November 1. The program features songs from artists such as John Legend, Ed Sheeran, Dan + Shay, AJR, and Drake. The vocal ensemble is set to release its new album, In Full Color, on Friday and it will be available for purchase at the concert. The show begins at 8 p.m. at Strong Auditorium. Tickets are $7 for students, $10 for faculty and staff, and $15 for the general public. Purchase tickets online or at the door.

#2: Peruse and shop for art by master artisans

Find one-of-a-kind works by master craft artists at the 19th annual Fine Craft Show & Sale at the Memorial Art Gallery, Saturday, November 2 and Sunday, November 3. The show is sponsored by the Gallery Council and features craft arts in ceramics, fiber, glass, jewelry, mixed media, leather, wood, and wearable art. The show runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The cost is $15 and includes museum admission. On Friday evening, the museum will offer an opportunity to meet and mingle with the artists at an exclusive opening party, from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, November 1. Tickets for the party are $45 and can be purchased online.

#3: Cheer for Rochester soccer teams at Fauver

Rochester’s soccer teams play important home games on Friday, November 1 and Sunday, November 2 as the season winds down. On Friday night, Rochester hosts NYU with women’s team at 5 p.m., and the men’s team at 7:30 p.m. Sunday is senior day and it’s Rochester against Brandeis University, with women playing at 11 a.m. and men at 1:30 p.m. Members of the Class of 2020 will be honored before each game with family and friends on hand. The games will be held at Fauver Stadium and admission is free. Several other Rochester teams are on the road this weekend—volleyball at RIT in a regional challenge Friday and Saturday, field hockey at Geneseo on Saturday, cross country at the UAA Championships in Pittsburgh on Saturday. #4: Attend an explorative symposium on whale song

Targeting the ecology of oceans, humpback whales and their song is the focus of the symposium, “Humpback Whales and Their Extraordinary Mystery of Song,” on Sunday, November 3. The event—a creation of the Arts in Mind Project at the School of Medicine and Dentistry in collaboration with the Institute for the Performing Arts, and the Institute for Music Leadership at the Eastman School of Music—features cetacean biologist Jim Darlin and National Geographic photographer Charles (Flip) Nicklin. The symposium, which is free and open to the public, will culminate in a performance of the premiere of Unsoftly, to the Night by composer and Eastman faculty member Matt Curlee. The piece is inspired by whale song and will feature student performers from the Eastman School as well as members of BIODANCE and students and faculty members from the Program of Dance and Movement. The symposium is from noon to 5 p.m. at Hatch Recital Hall at the Eastman School.

#5: Hear faculty artist performance at Hatch Recital Hall

Eastman’s Faculty Artist Series will feature Mark Kellogg on Sunday, November 3. The concert will also feature pianists Priscilla Yuen and Christopher Azzara. Kellogg is an associate professor of trombone at the Eastman School and also serves as director for the school’s community engagement program, Eastman To Go. He has appeared as soloist with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and is a former member of the San Francisco Symphony, Syracuse Symphony, and National Repertory Orchestra. A jazz and chamber musician, Kellogg is the founding member of the brass and percussion ensemble Rhythm & Brass. The ensemble has toured the United States and Japan and recorded four CD’s during his two years in the group. During his career, Kellogg has performed with Clark Terry, Chris Vadala, Wynton Marsalis, Eddie Daniels, and Mel Torme. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in Hatch Recital Hall at Eastman. Tickets are $10 for general admission and free to University of Rochester ID holders.
