The calendar features a variety of events at all campuses, including the River Campus, Eastman School, Memorial Art Gallery, and Medical Center.

 

#1: Hear traditional, contemporary compositions— and video game music, too

The Department of Music presents a special combined Wind Symphony, Brass Choir & Jazz Ensemble Concert on Friday, February 22. Bill Tiberio conducts the performance as the ensembles play both traditional and contemporary pieces. Listen for a special series of arrangements by former Eastman School professor Eric Limbach, including music from the Minecraft video game, “Craft Suite.” The performance will conclude with a piece featuring all of the brass players from all three ensembles. The concert starts at 7 p.m. at Strong Auditorium. Admission is free. The concert will also be streamed live at http://www.rochester.edu/news/live/.

#2: See ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ movie for free

The University’s Cinema Group will offer screenings of the movie Crazy Rich Asians on Saturday, February 23. Based on a global best-selling novel by author Kevin Kwan, the American romantic comedy follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu to Singapore to meet her boyfriend’s family. The film is directed by Jon Chu and stars Constance Wu as Rachel; Henry Golding as Nicky Young; and Michelle Yeoh as Eleanor Young. Screenings are free and open to all. The movies begin at 7, 9:30 p.m., and midnight, in Hoyt Auditorium on the River Campus.

#3: Enjoy an afternoon of art with the kids

The Memorial Art Gallery presents “Kids Create Dates,” on Saturday, February 23, an opportunity for parents to bring their kids ages 4 to 14 to the art museum for some do-it-yourself art projects, from noon to 2 p.m. The cost is $10 per child for each session, which includes materials. The program is flexible: Bring your kids before or after you roam the museum’s exhibitions. Families can pick up “MAGbags,” which are activity packs for families to use while exploring the museum. Exhibitions currently on view at the museum include Modern Czech Photography: A Portfolio and Peter Fischli & David Weiss: The Way Things Go. #4: Attend a screening, panel discussion on personal image

The School of Nursing will host a screening and panel discussion on advertising and the influence on personal image in the documentary Killing Us Softly 4—Advertising’s Image of Women on Sunday, February 24. Created by Author, filmmaker, and activist Jean Kilbourne, the film explores the connection between advertising and public health issues. The panel will include marketing executives and medical professionals. The event is free and part of a series of events happening during National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. Cosponsored by the Western New York Comprehensive Care for Eating Disorders.  The screening begins at 2 p.m. at the Little Theatre, 240 East Avenue.

#5: Listen to the vocal music of Brahms, Mahler, and Mendelssohn

The Eastman School of Music’s Repertory Singers and Women’s Chorus will give a free performance on Sunday, February 24. The program includes Marianna Martines’s “Dixit Dominus,” Gustav Mahler’s “Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen,” Johannes Brahms’s “Der Abend,” Felix Mendelssohn’s “Die Nachtigall,” and Edward Elgar’s “Serenade.” Led by conductors, Joe Taff and Noemi Binag, Eastman’s Repertory Singers ensemble is a mixed 60-voice chorus of Eastman students presenting frequent performances under the director of graduate students in conducting, that performs styles ranging from Renaissance madrigals and motets to premiers of contemporary works. The Women’s Chorus, conducted by Philip Silvey, is a select ensemble made up of Eastman music majors and women in other majors throughout the University. The performance begins at 3 p.m. in Kilbourn Hall at the Eastman School.
