YMCA, University partnership provides membership discounts for University staff

Looking to get in shape, stay in shape, or reach a wellness goal in 2016? Thanks to a unique partnership between the University of Rochester and the YMCA of Greater Rochester, all University employees, including union members, are eligible for special membership rates. The discount applies to memberships at all 10 Greater Rochester YMCA branches in Monroe County and Victor. The facilities—which you’ll find across urban and suburban areas—offer an array of programs for everyone, from the very young all the way up through older adults.

The YMCA of Greater Rochester also has funding available for employees who, depending on their salary and benefits, may be eligible for other assistance opportunities. Register at your local Y branch. More information about the partnership can be found on the YMCA website.

YMCA services

Members have access to all of the YMCA health and wellness signature programs, including instructional swim and aquatic safety classes, yoga, spinning, weight training, cardiovascular equipment, and, at some of its locations, a program for adult cancer survivors (LIVESTRONG at the YMCA).

You’ll also find “members only” pricing for popular services such as child care, camps, and youth-serving programs; activities for “tweens;” and youth leadership opportunities.

On top of the special rates for UR employees, the YMCA waives the traditional one-time joining fee for those who sign up for a new membership—you can save up to $75.

How to sign up

Bring your work ID and a government-issued ID to the main desk at the Greater Rochester YMCA branch of your choice or the Canandaigua YMCA and ask to sign up. YMCA staff will be available to help you choose the membership that best fits your needs. You can also begin the enrollment process online. To take advantage of the University employee membership rates, put “UOR” in the promo code box. Just make sure you bring your work badge and a government-issued ID on your first visit to the Y so that staff can verify your employment.

Already a YMCA member? Take your UR ID badge to the main desk and you can start receiving the discounted rate, too.

There are no contracts when you join the YMCA. Membership is month-to-month, and you can cancel it at any time.
