#1: Black Student Summit
Mitzi Miller, editor-in-chief of Ebony Magazine, will give the keynote as part of the Joint Collegiate Black Student Summit from March 4 to 6. The event will feature student-led sessions, networking, and additional talks by the Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren; Valeria Sinclair-Chapman of Purdue University, and Rickey Harvey Jr., president of the Black Students Caucus at Colgate Rochester Divinity School. #2: Women’s Film Series
The Women’s History Month Film Series, hosted by the Little Theatre, WXXI, and the Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, will kick off with a screening of the 2015 Sundance Award-winning film Dreamcatcher at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 6 at the Little Theatre. The film, directed by Brenda Myers-Powell, tells the story a former prostitute who defies the odds of survival. Following the screening, Catherine Cerulli, director of the Susan B. Anthony Center; and Barbara LeSavoy, director of women and gender studies at the College at Brockport, will lead a discussion with the audience. The series continues in the evening with a screening of the Ethiopian drama, Difret at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5 and free for students.
#3: Chiarenza
The abstract photography of Carl Chiarenza, professor emeritus and artist in residence in the Department of Art History, is on view through March 18 on the ground floor of Rush Rhees Library. In addition, visit the library’s new exhibit, Language Architects through the Ages, featuring old and new examples of imaginative use of alphabets, ciphers, and invented languages, at the Robbins Library. The library’s spring break hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, March 4; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 5 and Sunday, March 6. Read more about the exhibits online.
#4: D-III Playoffs
Rochester hosts the first round of the women’s basketball NCAA Division III playoffs this weekend in the Palestra in the Georgen Athletic Center. On Friday, March 4, it’s Clarkson University vs. Stockton University at 5 p.m., and in the second game, the Yellowjackets take on Johnson & Wales University at 7 p.m.. On Saturday, March 5, the winners play at 7 p.m. for the right to advance to the Sweet 16 round. Admission is free. uofrathletics.com.
#5: Bellotti and Porter
Edoardo Bellotti and William Porter of the Eastman School of Music will perform several classical pieces, including Bach’s Concerto in C Major for Two Harpsichords and Prelude, Fugue and Allegro in E-flat Major, at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 3, as part of the Faculty Artist Series in Hatch Recital Hall. Virtuoso organist and renowned improviser Bellotti is considered a leading expert in the performance of Renaissance and Baroque keyboard music; and Porter, who recently retired as a professor at Eastman, is recognized around the world for his skill in improvisation in a wide range of styles.
