At a March 3 event in Rush Rhees Library, University veterans were recognized for their military service and pinned with a new “Veteran Rocky” lapel pin. The Equal Opportunity Office hosted the event, which also highlighted the new University veterans’ web page (http://universityofrochester-veterans.jobs), aimed at connecting veterans and reservists to jobs at the University.

Speaking at the ceremony were President and CEO Joel Seligman; Morgan Levy, Director of Equal Opportunity; and veterans Anthony Kinslow, associate vice president for human resources, and Peter Robinson, vice president and chief operating officer of the University of Rochester Medical Center.

The new website helps to connect job applicants with military experience and knowledge to positions at the University well matched for their qualifications. “Part of this initiative is to help people translate their military duties into what their civilian jobs might look like, and to make sure veterans know the University is a welcoming environment,” said Kinslow. “We know that veterans bring valuable contributions to our community.”

The new website builds on the support services offered through the University that help ease the transition from active service to employment or degree programs. In 2013, the University created the Veterans Alliance, an affinity group that helps active military and veteran students, staff, faculty, alumni, and their families succeed in higher education. In addition to providing a support network, the alliance hosts social events for the veteran community and its supporters, including military appreciation football games, panel discussions, and the annual Veterans Day Run to the Greater Rochester Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Highland Park.

In 2014, Rochester opened its Veteran and Military Family Services Office, dedicated to providing support to veterans through a successful transition from military life to the classroom. The office serves as a liaison between veterans and a number of services provided across campus.
