On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, University alumnus Zhe “Zack” Zeng, a former Brighton Volunteer Ambulance (BVA) member and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), was starting his workday in New York City when two hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center, about three blocks from the Bank of New York where he worked. The occupants of Zeng’s building were ordered to evacuate, and he grabbed some supplies from his office to administer first-aid to the injured near the fallen towers, still in his business suit. He perished trying to save others.

Zeng was a 1995 electrical engineering graduate of the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, and as well as a graduate of the Simon Business School, earning his MBA in 1998. He was an EMT with BVA while he was a student here.

In January 2016, the BVA Board of Directors unanimously passed a motion to dedicate its new ambulance “Brighton 3059” in perpetuity, “In memory of Zhe ‘Zack’ Zeng and all the rescuers who died on September 11, 2001. ‘So Others May Live.’”

An outdoor dedication and remembrance ceremony from 3-4 p.m., Tuesday, May 31, on the Eastman Quadrangle, River Campus. The rain location is Schlegel Hall, Room 107.

The ambulance will be parked on the Eastman Quadrangle for the ceremony.

Paul Burgett, Vice President, Senior Advisor to the President and University Dean, will MC the ceremony and deliver a welcome. Paul knew Zeng as an undergraduate student.

Additional remarks will be made by:

  • Robert Clark, Dean of the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences
  • Andrew Ainslie, Dean of the Simon Business School
  • BVA President Daniel McCue

University NROTC Honor Guard will present colors. Ambulance tours and reception to follow. Event is open to the University community, including alumni, and media coverage is welcome.
